engine swap years to avoid?

yesterday I pulled the engine apart on the Runner... boy did i get a chop job... I bought this last month as a project. anyway previous owner did quite a few bonuses for me... He had "rebuilt / resealed" what ever and fixed it good. So after what i see he did, I will either need a new 3.0 engine. Or swap into the 3400. I will go out today and look at a few in the local area... anything to watch out for... any particular years for 3400 that are better or worse when doing the swap??? I have an auto in the Runner now. Id like to keep it. Here is one of many fine techniques he used... there should be a bolt head on top of that washer... Yes he welded the washer to what was left of the bolt he twisted off

95.5-96 3.4 had some head gasket issues, but nothing like the 3.0

crolison: thanks I will watch for it...
jake... yea there was other things also... vac line not laying nicely as if they didn't belong on that port... prolly 1 of 4 bolts loose... like finger tight... exhaust manifold bolts stripped... I wonder if the head bolts are even tight, causing the gasket issue... amazing all that time into the engine, to leave things loose.

thx mt. goat for chiming in... Ive been reading some of your comments in older posts... like 2yr old posts... My big hangup comes in pricing and return. I have done a few eng swaps... threes more cost than just the engine and tranny price... its more of the extras that get you in the cost. I'm debating on just dropping in an older (top end rebuilt 20k miles ago) or just dropping in 3400. Not to sure on keeping this runner. I will keep it through summer for sure. From all the reading it seems it can be done pretty cheap... reuse oil pan new hoses and belts, what ever maint items you want to change while its out. Oh this new engine has 80k on it... the guy was going to do the conversion, so he has done the dipstick swap and has new oil pan

I went with a 97 Tacoma engine. Worked out well in terms of the swap.

I have a 5 speed. Bolts right up. I used the flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate from the 3.4 and the throwout bearing from the 3.0.
