engine swap

Most definitely... unless of course you do something wrong.
That was the useless answer... as your question seems to lack a little detail.
As with any swap, your attention to detail and personal ability will dictate how well the finished project will operate, as well as accessories.
Anything can be done.

I personally wouldn't know what to recommend... but I would like to see a Toyota stay Toyota. I'd search YT and the internet. There are many swaps, and just as many opinions, on what works best and how to do it.
If I ever swap my 3.0, it will be with a 3.4. But that's on a 4Runner, and I have no need for the HP of a V8.
I don't know enough about your airbag system to answer your question. Ultimately, most of an automobiles electronics is related at some point. I'd think you'd have to worry about the sensors involved in your airbag system, and make sure they stay correctly wired.
Get a Toyota factory manual for the model year of your Cruiser. They can generally be found on E-Bay, but may take some time. Study the electrical diagrams and see what components are necessary and how they relate to your current powerplant... if at all.

the airbags are not directly connected to the engine wiring harness but your ecu is "linked" via serial data to your body control module which will try to communicate with your ecu and have no communications. Now i dont know if anyone out there reprograms, tunes and recalibrates toyota modules. It is also possible that the bcm is a stand alone but probably not. You need to do research on the wiring of your vehicle. as for your air bags-they will work and if you dont touch the wiring it will be ok. will you posible have codes in your bcm? yes. If you want to test this before you even think about the swap find pinouts of your ecu (i may be able to help) and temporarily disconect the the wire that connects the two: may say serial data, may say uart or others. snip the wire in a repairable spot and see if you get bcm codes or whether or not all interior functions work as designed.
let me know if i can help with wiring diagrams etc.-good luck

Infiltrator,
Do a search for engine swaps for your 4Runner (or 89-95 truck). The easiest would be the 3.4 swap, which there are many threads about, but there have also been Supra and Lexus engine swaps, as well. I think most of us around here prefer to see a Toyota stay a Toyota, but there are also options for Chevy 350s and Ford engines, as well.
If you are feeling really adventurous, there are also diesel swaps that can be done.
Search is your friend!
