eliminating steering shaft slip joint

I have an 87 Toy 4x2 that has a worn out steering shaft slip joint. Im looking to get rid of the slip joint and go solid shaft from the steering box up the steering wheel. Anyone have any thoughts or ideas on this. I have checked places like Flaming River and Borgson for a u joint and shaft but with little results. So any help would be great.

Slip joints are a safety feature in a crash so you don't eat steering column.
Replace the joint IMO.

Just put a tack weld at the joint. Enough to keep it together under full lock stress but not enough so the shaft will collapse under catastrophic cercumstances.

Fix it properly.

Unless you want to perish like the Corvair drivers of the '60's did in minor frontal collisions.

Is there any way you can squeeze the lash out of it? Or the two hammer crimping method?

I wouldn't imagine it would need to be hardened but could be.
