Dropping tranny tonight
So this is the first time I've had to do this. I think I'll be just fine. I put the motor in so I'm pretty sure if I can do that then this won't be an issue. I do have one, kind of stupid question though: Do I really need to drain the tranny before dropping it? Looking at everything, it doesn't seem that there is a need to do it. Both front and rear drivelines just bolt on to the back and front of the t-case. 4 bolts on each and the driveline is loose and can be moved out of the way. Am I understanding that right?

just did a clutch in an 84 yesterday. NO you don't have to drain any fluid. Just make sure you don't tip the tranny on its side or fluid will come out. Use a tranny jack. Go rent one if you don't have one. It will make things A WHOLE LOT MORE EASY!
Take off the drivelines and unbolt the crossmember from the FRAME only not the tranny then move the tranny, the still connected crossmember, and drivelines out of the way.
If you can put in and take out a motor the tranny is no problem.
Have fun!

Well that makes me feel better with the fluid part out of the way. Yea, I wanted to get a tranny jack today but work was crazy and didn't have a chance to go get it. Just running with a floor jack on this adventure. Don't be surprised if I get on here with any hangups I might come across. Really don't want to spend an entire weekend on this.

why are you dropping the tranny?
Somehow you are going to have to balance that transmission and keep it upright. Don't let it fall over. The only hang up is if you are doing the clutch you need to re surface the flywheel and that takes a machine shop. Sat and Sun they are closed here.

Throw out bearing seized up solid. Everything else looks really good inside so tomorrow is going to be oil pan gasket and some detail cleanup. Surprised at how smooth and easy it all went so far.

The whole purpose for doing this was I've had this really bad squealing coming out of the clutch. I knew it had to be one of the bearings in there so I went a bought a new clutch set because since I had to get into it, I might as well replace everything. Was going to do the rear main also but it looks really good still. Everything is nice and dry inside the bell housing. Drained the oil last night and today I'm going to pull the pan off and re-do the gasket. I already did it once this spring, but I took it out through the front, which was a major pita, and I don't think I got a very good seal on it. Hopefully have everything back in before the Oregon game at 7 tonight. Only took just over 2 hours to take everything out.
