Driveshaft go bye bye

Well I was on my home from work tonight and I decided to take the interstate. I started feeling a light vibration then a few mins later there was a loud noise then sparks flying from under my truck. I though axle broke or something. Now I need a new drive shaft haha. The sucky part is that there are NO 4x4 Toyota Pickups in any salvage yards around here. Would it be safe to drive it to work until Friday? I drive about 40 miles round trip a day. My wife has a Jeep but I dont want to drive it to work. Even if it does have AC haha. And if anyone has a rear drive shaft for sale cheap let me know. What all years are interchangable? thanks for any help.

All the bolt holes are either broken off or bent to hell

well you could pull the rear drv line and put in 4wd. I just would avoid the high way in 4wd and keep it limited to emergencies. Just drive the damn heep and get over your pride. We all have to do things we're not proud of to make a living sometimes.

Next time make sure your drive shaft bolts are all there and torqued properly. I'll put $5 on 1 of the nuts/ bolts worked itself loose and left only 3 to do the job.

Gee seems like I had a similar 'operator head space and timing failure' a couple of years ago...just like Scuba said...

Anyway yesterday I had a vibration start on the way to work, I thought i would check it out when I got home. Got off work this morning and forgot about it, about halfway home, it was frigging terrible, than thunk at 35 i have to pull over and pick this up and put it in the passenger seat:

it came off at the transfer case end...evidently my head was further up my butt than usual and I forgot to tighten the nuts and bolts

just scraped up a little bit..The Big Guy upstairs was looking out for me as this was morning rush hour.
Pulled it and five minutes later back on the road
Tell you what though driving a locked front end in 2wd it sure pulls a lot on pavement but I got home after a few minute delay but do I feel like the proverbial idiot...

check your work...

Been talking too much smack at work about Jeeps?
Just kidding...
Drive the jeep. You can drive it using the front shaft, if you are locked up front I wouldn't do it.

For future reference. Car-Part.com.

Searched AR for 1986 Toyota Truck (except T100 & Tundra) Rear Drive Shaft 4x4 SWB MT w/o turbo:

$100 Strop Auto Sales and Salvage USA-AR(Osceola) 1-800-262-7970

$125 Barefield's Auto Salvage USA-AR(Russellville) 1-800-748-8811

Or you can use just the part he has. So long as the bolt hole pattern matches yours.

ScottyC sent me a replacement section for my driveshaft. now all I need are 4 bolts. Would it be fine if I just used grade 8 bolts? Or is there a place where I can order some cheap ones?

Driveshaft bolts are hardened metric bolts. Go to the dealer. They should have them.

Also, make sure to have that shaft "in phase" when you put it back together. Its very important.

You can get new ones from Toyota, they are not all that expensive. I might have some used nuts/bolts from mine if you can't find any locally.
