do i have a rear locker?

ok, i never thought i had a locker, but in my explorations i found that a downside of a locker is when you dont have traction the truck will slide downhill from side to side (i have experienced this multiple times so it got me thinking)

so i lifted the rear of my truck and turned one wheel, the other wheel started spinning a different direction, then i started to spin the wheel the opposite direction and the rear kinda clicked and the other wheel stopped spinning period, kept trying the couldnt get the wheel to move...????

after that i did a google search and it said if the wheel turns the opposite direction its a LSD... i always thought this just meant it was an open diff, but ive never seen one wheel stop spinning all together

ps- the guy i bought my truck from's reply to "whats in the rear" was "idk a toyota axle?" and he only had the truck for a year or two so maybe the guy he bought it from put a locker in it?

i am not completely sure, but i would think no. since my truck wheels spin in the opposite direction when turned off the ground.

Well if you had a lunchbox locker in there both wheels would have spun in the same direction. I don't know what's up with the "click" when you reversed directions, but it doesn't sound good...

You should consider draining the diff oil and looking for metal chunks.

If the driveshaft isn't turning and the "other" wheel spins opposite of the one you're turning, that's normal behavior for an open diff.

As for why it clicked or stopped.. no idea.

put the rear up on jack stands and run the truck in 1st gear and let it idle. THEN see if you can stop one of those wheels...

if you can stop one and the other keeps spinning, you don't have a locker...

if you just cannot stop that wheel, then you're locked ma boy

it wasnt as much of a click as when i was rotating the wheel in reverse then quickly started rotating it forward the other wheel stopped spinning all together, trying both directions again, and the other wheel still wouldnt move

Where was the click/clunk?

Was the click/clunk near the brake or the pumpkin? If near the brake, could be a little rock or something jaming the brake. If it was in the pumpkin there could be something broke.

Anyway, as far as I know you describe an open diff. Why it slides to the side I can't answer. But the jack stand test should be definitive.

If u had a lunchbox locker, it would click anytime one wheel spins faster than the other. If I jack y rig, and spin one tire...usually, the other side spins too... sometimes it dont tho, and u just hear click, click, click.....

as mentioned drain the diff and inspect for chunks of metal...

It only takes about 30-45 minutes to pull a rear third if you really want to find out.
1-block front wheels
2-jack up rear of truck, put jackstands under axles
3-undo brakes lines, let brake fluid drain into a can or something (don't reuse)
4-undo e-brake cables
5-undo 4 14 mm nuts on each side, pull out the axle, do not let them rest on the axle seal or it will leak down the road
6-remove the 10 or 12 12mm nuts around the third, pull that sucker out
7- inspect it

Service manual link is in my Sig-

i dont think anything is broken, drove the truck last night and everything was fine, am having an electrical problem, but that has nothing to do with the rear end

why would it drive fine before and after, but i broke something when i was moving the wheel by hand?

EDIT: could it just be a broken spider gear? otherwise the truck shouldnt drive at all/ should whine/ should clunk... so the ring n pinion have to be fine..... all the more reason to get a lunchbox locker

why not just life ONE tire off the ground and start it and put it in gear???

That way, if only one tire moves you have an open diff. If the truck moves then you don't.

Not hard

Try pulling the rear third and finding out what made that clicking noise, if its not a snap or clunk(the healthy kind, like an automatic going into 4x4) then it sounds like you locked. But it will be obvious when you remove the pumpkin and see an industrial looking hunk of metal sitting in your differential
