differential leaking

hey guys, so far from my last thread i was able to do alot of work to the truck and fixed my valves, they were a bit tight, thanks for the input. But now it seems i have another problem, turns out on my rear end, i have some differential fluid leaking. Its not coming from the axles, but where the driveshaft links up to the rear ends, the bolts are tight so idk what the deal is....
any help?

That would be the pinion seal.

pinion seal and/or bearing as well. Could also be a plugged up differential breather causing excessive pressure in the housing squirting fluid out the pinion seal.

Thank you, 4Crawler!

Rear diff:
Make sure all the bolts are tightened. Then, you will need a new gasket or FIPG.

Trying to tighten the third member made mine worse. And I would use FIPG instead of a gasket.

Okay. So you need to remove the 3rd from the housing and put new FIPG on

I've done both. I think the large seal was easier. I used the paper gasket. Figured I would not get the surfaces clean.

thanks ya'll. I managed to take to driveshaft off and i took the flange off. My pinion seal was shot! Almost as soon as i changed that seal and drove it, i saw that it was now leaking from the axle seals....
if it aint one thing its another

well, if you ever end up leaking from the gasket between the 3rd and the diff, check out my diy link i my signature below - it's not that hard....just be sure to let the gasket seal overnight before putting in NEW oil

NOOB question! How are you pre-loading the bearing in there? Won't it fail down the road if it's not at the proper torque? I have the same problem; my tech buddy says it's a tough DIY to get it right. He suggests I pick up a whole new 3rd member for $20 at the parts yard and pop that on, with the seal in it already!
Pros = time saver. Cons: you don't know if the 'new' diff will also leak...

The link to the procedure for replacing the pinion seal has been posted twice in this thread.

I did read it. It didn't seem complicated enough to be 'formally' pre-loading the bearing. But if it works, it works!

There's nothing formal about it but if Roger Brown (4crawler) says it works, I believe it.

Good to know! It was an honest question on my part - ppl say "you have to take it to Toyota and have them do it"...that part I didn't like hearing. There is ALWAYS a work-around. I'd take the chance and do it this way, for sure.
