so i just recently purchased a 1986 4runner with the 22re non turbo with the glorious amount of 275k miles on it. (barely broken in right haha) any way the coolant temp sensor in the top of the thermostat housing has been tampered with and the wire is being held into the plug by house caulking. the sensor on the dash reads above the red line all the time. i have only driven the truck around my neighborhood twice (second time found a mud hole) after fiddling with the wire and or plug to see if it'd change any thing..and it didn't lol. so i went to the auto zone website and the are showing a "2 prong style" (heres the link http://www.autozone.com/autozone/cat...&parentId=52-0 ) yet mine is only a one prong style and only has one wire coming out of the top...am i suppose to have the 2 wire version? i can go take pics if it'll help..

I believe that the Two pronged one is for the ECU and the single is for the dash gauge. DO a search on here and you should find pics and descriptions.

The top of the t-stat sender is for the A/C amplifier, assuming A/C is installed. Could also be for the A/T computer or for turbo 22RETs.

 

yupp a/c is installed. and cappy im doing the search right now. any other thoughts on the situation guys? thanks for the help so far.

 

so i searched and found a couple threads. (came to the realization i need to go get the haynes book) also is there a way to test the sensor to see if its bad? and so pressumably there is 2 different sensor's under 2 names for the same thing...so you have to coolant temp sensor going to the ecu...but now the second one is just a dummy sensor if you may, that just reads for the gauge on the dash? just trying to make sure i understand the lay out..

Did you ever diagnose this problem? I'm having the same issue. I assume it wasn't the sensor on the thermostat housing but another one?

 

The temperature sending unit for the dash gauge is located between the valve cover and intake, in the middle on a 22RE.

 

you guys are awesome thanks for the info. couldnt get gauge in dash to work but couldnt find the sender. found it thanks to this site and thread. What is the sender on the passenger side of engine in front of the fuel filter a couple inches????

what should a 2.8L diesel non turbo run at?

my 85 4runner runs at 90 degrees in winter around town, is that too hot?

 

it has a new fan and everything, cant understand why its so hot

 

maybe my gauge is faulty because it doesnt seem warm
