Clutch Problems

Greetings,

So lately ive been having lots of trouble with my FJ40's clutch, about 5 days ago i picked my car up from the mechanic and just before i got home i made a stop to buy some stuff and when i got back into the car (i had left it on 1st gear) i stepped on the clutch and tried to start it but it was as if i was trying to start it without using the clutch, i looked under the car and all the fluid was leaking. So the mechanic picked up the car and we bought a new "auxiliary bomb? pump?" (sorry don't know the word) he replaced it and cleaned the air out and all of that, i drove the car back home all good but then the next day i tried to start it and it was the same thing again, only difference is that this time it didn't leak, the mechanic came and said he just had to adjust the clutch and it would be all good, so he did it and yes the car was working fine... i took it out for a ride the next day and just when i was getting home i felt like the clutch was getting stuck, i stoped infront of my house and the pedal was really stiff so i pumped it about 2 times and by the 3rd time it was completely loose, i got off and looked under the car and again it was leaking all the fluid... Also i've been noticing that after about 1hr of driving the car after having it fixed i start hearing a small squeek, it sounds like when the wheel of a rusted bike spins, it a really faint sound, it stops when you step on the clutch.

Anyway i would appreciate any suggestions or information, really ive been wasting a lot of money fixing this thing just to have it stop working over and over

A little more info about the year and everything of your 40 would help. Sounds like a master cylinder to me, but it's hard to say. Something in the hydraulic line...but then I seem to remember some of those old FJ's are a mechanical clutch? I'm not sure. Squeaking noise almost sounds like a throwout bearing.

Looks like the slave (or release) cylinder. I'd just tell him your going to take it to a different mechanic and give him the bill if he doesn't fix it correctly.;

Another thing: if you're going to own a vehicle that old, learn to work on it! If you can find a GOOD mechanic, that's cool, but there's almost always going to be something needing attention, and it's cheap (and fun) to do it yourself, but seriously expensive to have someone else do it. Plus, I've had a lot of bad luck with mechanics. Sometimes they mess things up more than they fix things.

x2 on master cylinder and throwout bearing, definitely try and start working on your own vehicle get a service manual and have at it you will save a lot of money and have a lot more pride in your vehicle.

The car is a 64 but the clutch is one of the few original things it has, it has a 350 chevy, 35's, arb lockers, dana 44 and gm 12 bolt differentials and those sort of things..

I guess i'll give it a shot and try and fix it myself, i just don't want to make it worse and end up having to pay more $$$

Also, thanks for the replies

I don't know much about those vehicles, but what did the mechanic replace? There's nothing I know of in the clutch system that is an "auxillary something pump".

I'm trying to think of why it would be really stiff, then after a couple pumps, go limp. I guess if the slave cylinder is all messed up, in may be jamming, not allowing the rod to move, so it builds up a bunch of pressure, then finally blows a seal? I don't know.

He changed the slave cylinder, the one in the bottom close to the pedal... i called it auxiliary because in spanish is "bomba auxiliar" so i kinda made a spanglish translation there hehe... but it was the slave cylinder that he changed

Ok. Without more info or you checking into things farther, I don't have any other ideas. Maybe somebody else here does?
Good luck!
