can just the shocks in the front coils be replaced?

The shop I went to doesn't specialize in toyota's. but I am assuming the mechanic knows what he is talking about when it comes to my shocks. Is it possible to just relace the shocks inside the coils on the front of my 04 4runner SR5?

Ah, Yah!!! They are coilover struts. Requires a good coil compressor, but yes you can replace the "shock".

so what

would I have to get what is called a coil over system? They are being sold for like 1,000 bucks man, I can't afford that right now.I would like to avoid that. I guess coils are fine. Can I find 4 good shocks and labor for less than 950? I mean, I either get shocks, or the OME kit(850.00). what would you suggest? if shocks, what kind? its a 2004 4runner 5-speed V8 SR5. I also reado that OME are funny on some generation 4runners? Like I would have to special order front and rear, not by a package? I dont have that auto lift set up on the runner, but I don't know if that matters.

The mechanic said all 4 shocks are leaking. If you had this truck and someone told you that, how would you handle it?

Thanks a lot for looking out! I appreciate it.

Mike

No you don't have to buy coilover shocks. You can just replace the shock portion of the strut, or replace both the shocks and springs.

Can I "hit" on some cheap shocks?

Can I "hit" on some cheap shocks? I guess what I would like to know now is, in what negative ways will an OME 2inch lift kit installation potentially effect my truck. Once again, same mechanic told me a lift would wear my tires wrong, and affect the way other things ran. True? I want it to be Colorado trail worthy, but not beefy and completely devoted to the trail.

Awesome, thanks for all the response, you have helped me out so far...

One more thing

I guess a little beefy would be nice. The thing is, I can't really afford a big fix, but if replacing my shocks is a big fix, ill go for the kit, I just want to know what kit to get and what to expect. Do the shocks matter in terms of off-road capabilities. Sorry, I know this stuff probably sounds ridiculous, and annoying almost, but I am just trying to learn, and not screw up a lot in the process.

No xreas system, not set up anyways. If no button for it, does that mean its not set up for it as well?

Well if your going to replace the shocks now, Now would be the time to throw on a slight lift and get the longer shocks that match the lift.

As for lift and wear, It wont make it run weird, it might make your cv's have a worse angle then normal, which isnt serious.
Alignment wont be a big issue for any trained alignment tech.

No offense, But I think you need to find a new mechanic that deals with trucks alot..
