They had different (smaller) calipers on the runners that came with P225/75R15s. Mine did originally and a dealer or someone upgraded to 16s but left the smaller brakes.

4.30s have more torque and are better for bigger tires than 4.10s. 4.30 is a higher #, but a lower ratio than 4.10s.

When you have a lower ratio like 4.30s, you will have slower top speed because you rpms will be higher and redline faster than 4.10s. But you will have more acceleration and torque with the 4.30s - especially in the powerband (about 3-4K or whatever it is).

Thanks for all the great feedback guys...I have passed on both formentioned 4Runners, hoping to find something better. You're advice has been very helpful.

Just missed this one yesterday by several hours. A little pricey, but in impeccable shape and ALL the characteristics of a winner (note the little red button in the photos). Have a look if you are interested. Maybe a Yotatech'r got it?:

The search continues. Stay tuned...

Have you tried search tempest or hank's helper? Are you willing to do a little traveling? Weed though a lot of useless ads? With patience it's possible to find that warm fuzzy.
Yeah, I live in Virginia and 4Runners are pretty popular here. This is a dealer who apparently has way more into this vehicle (due to poor trade by my judgement) than he should.

Also, I've looked at 2 different runners coming out of PA that had bad frame rust...it's an east coast thing, as most of you guys already know.

And regarding the wheel size...you are right. I had to have seen 225/75/15. It was the '99 Highlander so it was confusing. Basically I have realized from the factory catalouge that there were so many packages available with this model year, that if it came stock with a locker the gearing would be 4.30, otherwise, any combo is possible. So I know now to do my homework, looking at each ride individually.

...And thanks for reminding me to keep looking for the warm and fuzzies...haha. Solid advice.

Yeah, that's more like it. Thanks for the reference, pendrag.

that Gaylord posting I do think is a scam...it passed around here on craigslist some time back with the mileage way lower.

Amazing it is listed again but 'just gone' yet again...I'm smelling bait and switch. 4Runners quite popular here also. 5 speed and rear locker would be asking a higher price than this-admittedly no leather like mine...

If it was indeed real I would be a bit skeptical about it. I believe there was a thread regarding this same pictured vehicle over on T4R. Still listed, yet not truly available...picture of back end with the emblems looks odd somehow not sure how.

Did not see the little red button referred to in the photos, maybe I missed something -it does have the rear diff lock

Also check out autotrader.com they have a nice Advanced Search feature so you can narrow down the search.

I bought my 4R sight unseen. I had very specific requirements and was very patient during the search. If it's the right car, you'll get the warm and fuzzies and won't mind waiting/traveling/etc.

Good luck to you!

I think that's too high on both of those. Heck both those vehicle are over 11 years old now...
I paid $3000 for my 99 4 runner. It's lifted dented a little and pinstriped from branches. It think u should shop around.

Well guys, I went astray and ended up finding a 2nd Gen that will do the job and keep me busy for a little while. If you are interested in checking it out, here's the thread:
