buying a '90 4runner with blown hg tonight

My first post, been looking for one for a while, excited to dig into it and make a driver, any advice? Its a 3.0 he says. 5speed, supposed to be in good shape.

I looked a little on swapping for a 22r but that seems like a spendy way to go, so Ill probably just fix the v6 right?

Thanks

Ok, but trying to do this on a low budget, do not want to spend much money on this thing if I dont have to.

3.4 is way too expensive if you are on a low budget. and a 22re swap is too. just do head gaskets. will still be a grand or more, but cheaper than the other.

direct 3.4 swaps are very cheap. ( as in pull the motor from one vehicle and drop it into the other ) given that you have all of the tools to do it...

I've got $0 in my 3.4 motor swap after selling off parts from the donor vehicle.

granted if you know how to do all of the wiring and mechanics yourself, but for your average joe, they are gonna take it to a mechanic which isn't gonna be cheap. that's what i was getting at.

not on your own of course, but isn't that what most mechanics charge to do it? including parts. or is that just when you do timing belt, and water pump at same time?

I dont know, never taken a rig to a mechanic. I know they wanted $3500 in labor to do my duramax headgaskets when it blew up... did that one myself too.

Is it easier to just pull the motor out to do this? Or should I do it in frame?

if i were you, i'd check the timing belt. your already gonna have it torn half way apart, so it may be preemptive maintenance to do the timing belt and water pump while you are there.

Definitely a very good idea. I would just do head gaskets and T-Belt while you are in there and enjoy the truck.

cheers!

So general concensus is no felpro head gaskets? I noticed they tried bars leak on it, hope they didnt plug the heater core.

Also, anyone know of any engine diagrams on the net? Been looking for info on this job.

Hope to have enough time to tear it down this weekend and see whats really going on in there.

gave up on uploading, hope this pic works better. Forum wanted a postage stamp.

Question

Just called dealer, here is the toyota prices for the parts...

- gasket set $380 (should have everything including head bolts) Kit at schucks with fel pro's was $240

- headgaskets alone are $64 each
- Headbolts alone they said $1.35 each
- Timing belt $45
- Knock sensor $240!!!! the wire for it is $15

Here is a great resource for manuals

8T8 build thread has alot of details and pics. Give you an idea what all is needed.

Here is their build thread. They have probably done alot of the legwork for you on where to get parts and such.
