Burning oil

I have a 93 toyota 22re that burns oil pretty bad on start up but isn't as bad as it warms up, lately the exhaust has been bluish black when I rev the Rpms. Also it's been randomly spitting a black substance, not oil but looks like char. Valve stem or what is it?

Sure sounds like it could be valve seals. How many miles?

202954 right now. Just bought as a project and he said he rebuilt because of leak but now it's burning. Any way to check that without tearing it apart?

I'd keep an eye on your oil level for a while and see just how much oil it is burning. Mine has a broken ring and a gouged cylinder wall and burns a quart about every 200 miles. Looks about like that on the ground every time i start it up.

It's probably about a quart every 400, which sucks, the oil in the pan now is black and chard so I think I'm getting back spray into my good oil
