Thumbs down Broke my tailgate latch...

Dumbass me tried forcing my tailgate latch open with some heavy oak rounds leaning up against it. Of course it broke... Does anyone know how to remove the tailgate latch? Do I need to take off the tailgate cover on the inside (underneath the bedliner)? Or is there a way to pop it out from the front? I'll call the dealer just for laughs, but in the end I'll just add it to my list of junkyard needs.

i had the same thing happen to me. I pulled the inside cover off and removed the latch to find that the little arm was broken off. so i cut the general shape out of 1/8th inch stainless and bent up a new one. took pin out of old latch and reused trim plastic. worked great not breaking again

Yeah you will definitely have to pop open the back cover to replace that. It should just be some philips screws if I remember correctly.

Are you talking about the handle or the latches on the sides of the tailgate that hold it shut?

The handle-it wouldn't budge so I just kept squeezing harder until *SNAP* Thanks for the replies all.

I had to replace mine when I bought my truck. It is really easy and took me maybe 10 minutes from start to finish. I bought mine off ebay for like $20.

FWIW, I use gun oil on my tailgate latches and it seems to help quite a bit with opening it under tension.
