Brake swap on solid axle truck

I have an 89 toyota pickup 22re I'll be doing a solid axle swap too soon. Will my brake calipers on my truck now fit on the straight axle? The axle is out of an 85'.

Thankyou

That kinda a trick question, as they won't swap directly on the 85 axel, the slotted rotors on your 89' pickup are wider than the solid rotors on the 85 axel, but they can be made to work.

Since you're going to do a SAS there's a couple things you're going to want to upgrade on the 85 axel, as you mentioned the first is brakes, you'll want to ditch the solid rotors and upgrade to slotted rotors. (more on that in a minute) the 2nd thing is the axel width. Since you have an IFS truck, your rear axel width is 3" wider than the 85' axel. To remedy this most companies offer wheel spacers to match the SA width to that ifs rear axel. What I did is put my ifs wheel hubs on the straight axel (the spindles are the same) but the offset on the ifs wheel hubs will space your wheel mounting surface out 1-1/2" on each side (3" total) so you can match the ifs rear axel width without using wheel spacers. You'll have to buy new slotted rotors, and mount the 89' calipers on the opposite side of the mounting flange "ears". There's a little grinding involved, along with drilling out the mounting holes bigger, but the extra work is worth it.

There's a similar way of doing it using Tacoma rotors, it has some grinding involved too, and longer wheel studs are needed. Rattlewagon has a really good writeups on this, I'll see if I can find it...hopefully this was helpful and not more confusing, lol.

Thanks ed! The longer wheel studs are only if youre running thick aluminum rims. Should be fine on steel rims.

Info is in my build thread, starting heerish --> https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199...l#post52151476
