Hello everyone!

I am new here, of course, and have a 1974 Hilux. It is in pretty good condition but needs some TLC and new parts. I am trying to find some brake parts, such as a new master cylinder and a brake booster....but these seem to be very hard to come by.

Also, the truck needs a new front grille and bumper and a few other little odds and ends.

The 18RC motor runs strong in it, but the carburator isn't that great...If I am not mistaken, it is a Weber 32/36. The electric choke does not work on it. I need to find a new one. or a better replacement.

If any of you guys could point me in the right direction, that would be great.

as for your carb, check for vacuum leaks. that's the biggest thing that'll make a weber run like crap, other than the fact that almost everybody just slaps the thing on and expects it to run great without tuning it. you can convert the electric choke to a manual one if you like, carbs.net sells a kit.

 

I have pretty much the exact same truck in my front yard, except mine was once Blue and now it's White with Blue chips showing!! My '77 has a 20R in it so I am saved from the hard hours looking for replacement parts, the Brakes will be difficult parts to find usually. I have a buddy that spent over $1200 for front brakes on his '76 Toy, he had to mail order from Timbuktu, took forever and cost tons.

 

yeah, for some reason i remember my buddy having trouble with brake parts...i'd think that napa would have everything?

 

Hey I have a 75 which is just like that except its grille is different and its the first year for the 20r. Its hard to get parts for it, I have just about go it back original but it needs the caps for the vents which are on the sides of the truck like yours if anyone has a idea where i might could find them id like to buy them off of you, most people dont even know what a hilux is anymore around here

 

If your carb is a DGEV, this is what you need to fix the choke, the thermal springs get old and break eventually.

Hook that up to a keyed 12v source and you're in business.

Toyota dealership, aftermarket parts store, junkyard (although I'll bet they're pretty hard to find, depending on where you are). It really may not be all that expensive of a part, but I don't know. I pretty much always check the dealership first to see their price.

 

For your carb problem, go to gotpropane.com. Convert it over to propane. According to them, guys with 22r's are getting 22re performance and better with the propane conversion. It's also cleaner, and up untill about a month ago it was half the price of gas. I am sure that will be the case again soon. For the cost of a replacement carb you can probably convert it and do away with the carb.
Convert the front brakes to newer disk brakes. You can probably get used parts for the conversion much cheaper than fixing that old stuff, and have better stopping power.
Good luck, do a build thread if you do either of these mods. It would be an interesting read, definately do before and after stuff and likes and dislikes.

Probably not. I can't even find one for my '83. Seems like for anything older than 1985, you won't find an online FSM.

 

how about your local library? ours has tons of manuals and you might be able to play with the xerox for a few hours
and i think my HS library had an online auto repair database...
