It's really easy. I ran 2X3s lengthwise over the wheel wells, added supports at each end, then 2X4s (I believe 5 of them) widthwise. Some 1/2" plywood screws down on top. You can screw down the carpet with fender washers to keep it from tearing. I have 11" underneath and about 26" between the platform and top of the shell. It's not super spacious, but it's a lot easier than putting up a tent every night. It's also nice to be able to adjust your position if your bed isn't quite level. All the stuff underneath provides some insulation between me and the platform, and I've been quite comfortable (even hot) when it's 40 degrees at night.

You can pick up some plastic file containers that just slide under the platform and hold all your food and clothes. You can see my grabber stick which is necessary to access things that slide to the cab end. The bed is rhino lined, which makes it easier to slide things around. Then I bought some stick and click LED lights. They come out when I'm not using it for camping.

I say grab a double hoop single kicker to the tailgate rollbar and slap some off road lights on it! I have a single hoop single kicker to the tailgate rollbar in my truck, with harbour freight special off road lights. Best look goin if you ask me!

i think it serves 2 purposes. one, like you said, to keep stuff from entering the cab, and two, to keep the cab from being crushed by loads going over the roof. there's a picture of this on failblog, but i can't find it

like what irab88 said its to keep stuff from entering the cab and like me if you haul wood or something you can just throw it into the back and not have to worry about hitting your window and breaking it

yeehaw: at the bottom of an "advanced post" there is a button labeled "manage attachments". in the new window, "browse" for up to 3 pictures, and hit "upload" when you're done. they'll show up like the pics i posted above

at the top of the page, there is a strip with "home photo gallery user cp..."
click on "user cp" (user control panel), and find on the left where it says "edit signature" and have at it!

i was browsing ebay last night, and i saw a camper shell that looked like the back end of a 4runner. while it seems unnecessary ("just buy a 4runner" i've heard so many times), i like the look of the shell.
ebay listing (ends tomorrow)

So stuff in the bed doesn't come through the window and give the driver a headache

I have seen some caps that make a pick up look like my 2 door 4runner. I dont know where to get them, but just thought it fit in with the 1st gen 4runner cap.
