Axle Interchange
I have been researching toyota rear axles. I have a heavy ride with aftermarket dual rear wheels, and am aware that some axles were not the best. The 2wd p.u. has 5 lug hubs, the 4wd p.u. has 6 lug, the heavy-duty rwd dual-wheel axle has 6 lug.
The important factor is whether the axle is a non-floating type, semi-floating type, or full-floating type.
so, does anyone know if the 1979-1983 p.u. 4wd rear axles
a.) bolt-in interchange with the 2wd rear axles (diffential off-set, mount pad distance, etc,
and
b.) have a full floating, semi-floating, or non-floating design
I have found that the land-cruiser had options for semi-floating axles or full-floating axles. Does anyone know if the 1981-ish land-cruiser fj-60 full-floating axle is a bolt-in under the toyota 2wd or 4wd p.u.?
and, as a last note, does anyone have any experience in converting a 2wd p.u. to 4wd?

Only the dual rear tire axles were Full Floating (meaning, if you break an axle shaft, the wheel stays on and the axle shaft can be replaced without removing the wheel - right?), all other Toyota axles are semi-floating (meaning, if you break an axle shaft, the wheel stays on, but you have to disassemble the whole thing to replace the axle shaft - right?)
Rear axles are interchangeable. Not sure about the WMS distances though.

The 2wd and 4wd are totally different. The only thing that is common is the 2wd 1 ton single rear wheel axle. They are both 8" diffs. Brakes, lug pattern and spline are different.
What heavy ride do you have? What wheels?

Thanks for the input. My "heavy ride" is a 20 1/2 Foot Sunrader RV with the original (single) (bad) 5 lug rear axle. It is "4wd", as there are two wheels on each rear drive axle (LOL).
Funny thing about it, the Motorhome gets better in-town mileage than my other driver, a 1983 mazda rx-7, at 13mpg in town, though worse on the road, at 20mpg compared to the rx-7's ~24npg. These are acurate figures, as I religiously record mileages and fuel consumed. (The rx-7 isn't running quite right - I have regularly gotten 17 in town on my last one, that died due to transmission & driveline u-joint failure.
I am building a new daily driver/work truck from another motorhome chassis that I've located, in the hopes of having a truck that might reach 30mpg on the road, 20mpg in town. Not sure if that is possible with a regular 2wd truck, or a 20' cab and chassis, with tandem axle. (not dual wheels), just two axles one in front of the other. 1976 20R engine, 4 speed (or 5 speed if I can get one to fit) manual tranny, and a 4.11 rear (drive) axle ratio.
13 foot 1-ton flat-bed Toyota truck, anybody?
