Automatic transmission

I have a 86 Toyota pickup and at times when I come to a stop, the trans won't down shift. When that happens, I have to put it in 1st. Can anyone help?

Dirty fluid, bad solenoids, contaminants in the valve body, bad transmission.....

I would research some of these issues, there are some good write ups on here

Thanks, I will check them out. Any other suggestions on which solenoids?

Question 86 22R auto tranny will shift into 1st, 2nd...not drive.

Just put new head gasket on my 86 2wd 22R. I put it in drive (has OD button) and take off. Shifts into 2nd fine.......will not shift to drive. Acts like a vacuum problem, as it was fine 2 days ago when I pulled it apart.......not so much now. Have tried several diagrams, none are exactly like mine as I bought it 4 years ago with already 120,000 on it. I have all vacuum lines hooked up and doesn't appear to be any leaks. Am lost for ideas now..........fluid is fine.
