I have an 85 4runner with the auto tranny, when it is shifted in to drive it will not go but, if you shift it in to 1st and manually shift it, It drives fine. what could be the problem? I cant do the jumper wire trouble shooting test because the light for the over drive does not work in the dash. any help would be great.

 

Steal a bulb from something else in the dash to test. Hint: The bulb that lights up the "Over-Drive" text fits in the OFF indicator. There are also a few tests you can do with a multimeter stuck in the test connector.

It sort of sounds like the transmission computer isn't doing anything if you need to manually shift it to move.
