ok, may seem like some dumb simple questions, but bear with me:

1. have you check for any obstructions that would prevent it from coming down?
2. I assume the mechanism is similar to a 1st gen (what I have exp with, so thats what im basing the rest of the question on), and if it is, it should have two swing arms that have rollers at the tips that ride in the track attached to the bottom of the window. Have you checked these rollers and track for any abnormalities?

Sounds like the window gear is stripped or the motor housing is worn out, OR the regulator is stripped. All three very common problems for 3rd gen 4Runners, especially in areas where they salt the roads (IE Boston)

crawl into the back of your truck, pop the carpet panel off the tailgate, remove the screws that hold the metal panel on, and have a looksee in there to see if anything looks out of place. It's a little more awkward to do it with the tailgate closed, but you can even remove the regulator and motor from that position if you need to. That will allow you to lower the window and open the tailgate so that you're a bit more comfortable working in there.

The motor was beat replaced it and everything is great now, Had a tuff time getting the motor removed with the tailgate up, Its a little tight but i reached behind the motor to get two of the bolts out, the third bolt can be easily accessed by removing the liscence plate holder and lights on the outside of the truck and reaching a extension socket threw the back of the truck, clean everything out and lube it up, golden! FYI window motor from left side of most model toyota's of similiar years will work. Thanks for the help guys!

I tend to check all reasonably easy causes first( IE window lock) BEFORE a post and waste others time on an other wise informative site.
Thanks

If the window was locked out with the window lock button, it wouldn't go CLANK when he tries to raise or lower the window. It just wouldn't do anything at all.

Good work, glad you got it fixed! Also, nice tip on the motor compatibility.

The wrecker I spoke with was of the opinion that that window motor from a Toyota of similar vintage was geared differently, its this true?
