Srry if this is in the wrong spot but... But im lookin at buying a truck. He has a 6in suspension lift, 35in A/T tires, and is gear at 5.29 in both axles. Is that to much? He said it doesnt feel underpowered, but it was jus wondering if it could hurt my mpg at all, or anything else? Its a 89, 22re, 5speed if that makes a difference. Thanx

 

nope 5.29's are correct for 35's. Add I believe it's the tallest available for a yota axle.

31's : 4.56
33's : 4.88
35's : 5.29

Wow, my buddy is running 33's on his 94 Toy Pickup, with 4.10s lol would 4.30s be oka with 31x10.50 on my 92 Toy (3.0) 4Runner?

 

i'm running the stock 4.10 in mine with 31's and a 22re just fine.

 

XXX, there is are actually 5.71s available for Yotas. Some people say they are too weak, but thats for another thread.

My two other yotas had 4.10s and 31s. It wasnt thats great. it was doable, but pretty slow. Its much better with 4.56s with 31s. My 4runner was fast when I was still running 31s after I did my exhaust.

There are a few on here that have IFS and 5:71's and they've broke the stub shafts on the front diff...

As for over geared or not. How bout compare the factory #'s to the new corrected gears & tires? That's easy enough with all the on-line gearing calculators there are these days...

Leaves out all the riff-raff "Well, I roll wit 44's and stock gears, and my 1986 22R with 96hp handles it fine"

And there is not a one-size-fits-all gear chart because all AT Toyota's did not come with 4:11's and 28" tall tires.

So the one used for the majority is most certainly not the one to use for every case.

AT's should bump up to the next gear. But you can get away with that for the amount of power you have.

99% of the ppl on here, IMO, are wheeling 96~115hp 22R/E's with 5 speeds. And unless you specify which truck you have, most will automatically assume that's what you're driving.

 

4.88 gears also work just fine, im running them with 37'' tires and have no problems at all.

 

Always a good idea to find out who set the gears up. Installation error is like the biggest reason for failure.

 

4.30's are a great combo for 31's.
you don't lose top end, and all the bottom grunt comes back

 

If you already have 4.10, your not going to notice anything going to 4.30s. Its only like a 100 RPM increase.

JDS- Do you know what your runner has for gears now? Is your 92 toy 4runner an auto? It probably already has 4.56s in it then. Check the axle code on the door jam.

 

Its a five speed. I did Check it. It has 4.30s in it.. I think it says G262 by the VIN but Ill double check.

x2, I would even check to make sure it's actually 5.29. People sell rigs all the time claiming high gearing in these trucks when its completely stock 4.10's or less.

 

Hey guys, I apologize for jumping into your thread, but I need help......my 4runner specs are listed below. I just went to 275/70/17 on the runner, which is 32.2", just under a 285. I know a lot of ppl are regearing after putting on 285's. I just drove to TN from SC (still in TN now) and noticed a huge difference, for the worse. It has way less power, struggles a lot more on hills inthe interstate. Do I need to regear to 4.88?? Not sure which gears I need. My truck came stock with 265/70/16(30.7")

 

4.56 or 4.88s would be a good choice. 4.56 would be a better match if you are stock other than the lift/tires. If you carry a lot of extra weight (or plan to) from shids, off road bumpers, sliders, winch, etc.. then 4.88s would be a better choice. This is assuming you have an auto tranny.

 

Gearing terminology lesson Part 1

Lower gears are higher numerically, and are refered to as shorter NOT taller. Think in terms of vehicle speed or wheel speed, low/short gears = low speed, high/tall gears = high speed.

5.29s are LOWER than 4.10s.

"Less" than 4.10s, numerically, would be say 3.90s. Nothing less than 4.10s EVER came stock on a 4WD Toyota prior to 1996. 3.90s were only found in 2WD axles.

It's more than that. And YES, you can easily tell the difference.

 

I agree with MudHippy that you can feel a difference between 4.10s and 4.30s, but that difference wouldn't be worth the $$ IMO. If you're gonna spend the dough, go at least 2 "steps" lower (i.e. 4.10s to 4.56s). Otherwise I think you would be disappointed with the bang for your buck.

 

Just curious... sorry for jumping into the thread... Planning on running 33x12.5's on my 95 3.0 V6 5spd... Comes stock with 4.56 gears and 31x10.5's, if I'm going to re-gear can I go as low as 5.29 with the 33's instead of 4.88 (which would keep the closest stock specs...) or would I be better off going with the 4.88?
