all parts needed for timing chain gasket replacement

i just bought a 92 4x4 pickup and found that it has a BAD oil leak. I called the previous owner and he said it was above the timing chain. I am used to working on GM cars and am not familiar at all with Toyota tech.

I was quoted $1000.00 to have this fixed, but that is way too high for me. I have done major overhauls to GM motors, but am uncomfortable just jumping in and trying to fix it without advice.

I need to know what all parts I will need and any special tools like pullers, etc. What approximately can I plan to spend on parts, etc. and how long does this job usually take.

I really appreciate any advice. Have a good day.

above the timing chain? Better talk to the original owner again. He might mean above the timing cover. Ask him on his last timing chain job if he removed the head. If he didn't there is a good possibility he means the headgasket is leaking that goes between the timing cover and the head.

If this is the case I had this happen to me because I was not careful putting the cover back on all while being in the dark and pinched that part of the headgasket which resulted in a pretty good size leak.

Mine was impossible to stop the leak. Ended up rebuilding the motor because of a spun rod bearing a few months later.

welcome to the forum Jason. Do some searching on timing chain replacement and you'll get a whole ton of threads on it. Fairly easy job in comparison to overhauling a gm motor. Toyota oem are the best parts imo but ted at engnbldr sells quality stuff as well. You can download the fsm on this forum as well after doing some searching. Find out how, where, and why you have a leak before you tear into it as you might be creating more work for your self when it could just be a simple valve cover gasket. Again welcome, and good luck.

thanks for the warm welcome. I appreciate all your input. And come to think of it the previous owner did say the leak was above the timing chain cover. I need to clean the front of the engine up so I can visually see where its coming out. I'll make time to do that this weekend. Im sure Ill be on here a lot looking for the info to get the job done.

You guys have a great night and thanks again.

Thanks 92 Toy,

The leak wound up being the oil pump gasket. I just got it fixed last week. The charge for fixing that was much nicer than what the whole timing chain thing would have.

I appreciate all your replies and hope you have a great day.
