air flow meter replacement

The air flow meter on my 1985 22re is not working right, a new one from Toyota is about a grand, is there any way to replace it with anything else (cheaper).

google search "22RE AFM upgrade" and read for a few hours.

there's several options and lots of pictures to go through, before you find what will work best for you.
