'94 PU Performance Upgrades

New to the site and could use some positive feedback...

My daily driver`s a 1-owner `94 PU with 22RE. Built it to go anywhere, and except for a mild TRD cam, KN filter, and header, have resisted doing much else to the motor. It averages 15MPG with a 5-spd MT, stock (4:10) gears, and 33`s.

Need more power from it. Something I can do over a weekend. Tired of playing bumper tag with tractor-trailers on the interstate, and if I have to pull a trail---forgetaboutit! At the same time, I`d like to retain some around-town driveability---if possible...

What`s a good GP cam that won`t drop MPGs below, say, 10, that`s suitable for on- & off-road?

I`ve also thought to re-gear it, going to, say, a 3:55 ratio?....

What about doing both, i.e. new cam and gears?....

Understand outfits like LCE offer tech advice, but would also like to hear from anyone with firsthand experience. Any information or advice`d be much appreciated!

well you already have a cam so should get either 4.56 or 4.88 gears with 33's. it will bring your ratio back to stock and you should get alittle bit better mpg aswell.

dear lord if you went to 3.55 gears you prolly wouldn't be able to accelerate onto the interstate or anything with any amount of speed.....

toyota's like low gears...so 4.88's for your 33s will be great

22re 5 speed. 33's should get 4.88's. Go find a 2nd gen 4runner being parted. Find an auto, then look on the door jamb tag for g144. Its an easy weekend project that will do alot for driveability. No use trying to ramp up that motor if its still gonna push tires way too big for its gears.

link in my sig will show you what you need for the straight swap.

edit*** I'll put it here, too. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...osting-204178/

Props to all who replied

Thanks to all for the words of wisdom. I'll definitely try 4.88 gears!
