Spool for front diff

Spool for front diff
I was wondering if anyone has ever put a spool in a ifs front end? I have a 95 4runner and switched it over the manual locking hubs and want able to lock both hubs and have the front fully lock for mud bogging. When it will be normal wheeling I will lock one wheel in. Just wondering if the spool will handle having one hub locked? Thanks

having one hub locked you will be in 3wd not 4wd. ADD or no ADD only 3 wheels will be driven.
Even with a lunchbox you still might have difficulty turning.
And an LSD might not work well in mud as the mud might actually provide more of a resistance then the LSD can provide.
Spools should be reserved for dedicated trail trucks or dedicated mud trucks, not a DD. And even then the trail trucks will still suffer from a turning disability with a spool in the front.

i dont see any problem with this at all, ive thought about doing it to my 4runner, if he only locks one hub then he will have no problem turning and if he gets into something really hairy he can always lock both and drive right out. i like the idea

Its a good idea as long as you don't ever need 4x4 on the road. But you live in P.E.I so I'm assuming you do... I would go lunchbox because you still have the same spool effect in the mud, and you won't really have as big of a problem when turning in 4 wheel drive, and you keep your street driving ability in 4x4 without having to unlock one hub.

My neighbor has a spool up front and he gets around with one hub locked in the snow. It does ok, but he also has a Dana 60 up there so I'm not sure how it will be on CVs. A selectable or lunchbox locker would be better in the snow and easier on CVs I believe, but a spool is cheaper. Lockrights are only like $200-250 though.

i dont understand why everyone is so against this!if he is mud bogging and has the front all locked up the tires will spin before any amount of stress is on the cvs. and if he unlocks one hub for any other wheeling or 4 wheel drive use the unlocked wheel will spin freely, also not stressing the cvs. its cheap and it works. yea a lunchbox is a better choice but spools provide better traction and are cheaper. i would do it if i was him

I am running 33x12.5 now but I am looking at 33x14 interco boggers right now. My truck spends more time off road then on the road. I agree with you sebastianholmes I can't see this being an problem, I will only have both sides locked when I am getting ready to hit a bog but when I am just rolling through normal wheeling it should be fine and not give me any problems with one side locked in. I was just going to lincoln lock it but thought it wasn't a good idea just incase the lincoln lock broke and take out the ring and pinion gear. I have pics of my truck in my profile. One more thing, do you guys think the toyota transfer case will hold up to a small block and tranny. I have a 350 with a 4wheel 700r, S-10 shorty headers and I am going to put in my truck and use the toyota transfer case, think it will hold up or should I use the chev transfer too and get the toyota end welded the to chev drive shafts? Anyone ever do this before, I mean use the toyota case, I have put all chev drivetrain, shafts and everything on my other 89 4runner and it was a job and a half. I want this to be as much as a bolt in this time around. Look in my profile for pic of my current truck.

Depends if you're talking spool or welded. If you go spool you have to get gears set up again. If you weld it or lunchbox you don't need to set up your gears. So if it is a mostly offroad truck and you are setting up your gears anyway, then sure spool will be fine.

Oh, and as for driving in the snow, if I have one side locked it wouldn't be any different then it being stock and in 4wheel drive, as for only one wheel drives it anyway, right? I know the spool will be fine in any condition with one side locked, I want to know if the spool will handle one axle locked in, you know break with only one end of the spool under pressure. Yeah I know I will have to set up the gears again, but if I watch what I am doing I should just be able to put it back together the same way as it was before I took it apart. Thanks for all the input to guys!!!!!!!

The only thing i would be worried about breaking with one side locked in is the hub that is unlocked... just because if something were to catch and your axle is spinning you might grenade the hub. I've heard of it happening before, not sure if anybody has seen it first hand.

Thanks, thats what I was wondering, but I will have both locked in it should be fine, right? I will only have one locked in normal wheeling (just driving like an old lady) trail driving.

34s are also big getting on the bigger heavier side for open ifs diffs.
I say do it. What if you got a ADD diff, so when you wanted to "open" it back up, you could just flick a switch, then lock it just as easy. I think there is a few thread on here about it.
And even if you install a lunchbox, you should still check your gear pattern! Any time that carier comes out, check it when it goes back in.

ADD diff is that the one where you have to back up to unlock the diff? I am not sure on how they work or where I might find one but I will look into it. Spring is coming and I want to make sure I have everything ready. Once again thanks for all the input.

ADD needs vacuum lines to operate, i don't see the point in adding ADD usually people get rid of it in favour of the non-ADD diff tube. IMO if you want a spool on the cheap, you drive mostly offroad, and you try to not grenade your hub when its unlocked, just weld your spiders.
