91 Pickup auto tranny problem?

My uncle gave me his 91 Toyota pickup with 172000 miles on it and the problem I noticed right off the bat is the automatic transmission will not shift to L4. It drives great in all gears and also shifts into H4 fine, but will not go into L4 at all. By the way, 4x4ing in H4 is no problem. What could be the problem? Any help will greatly be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Check your shift linkages for any binds or disconnects.

I thought there was another thread around here but I can't find it...

One problem you have is the H on your A340H. The tranny and TC are linked. The Transfer Case is more like a parasite... It must have the A340 as a host.

And IIRC, in low range... hold on.

"Transfer case is hydraulically actuated, high or low range will not engage without pressurized ATF."

Shares ATF with the tranny *in the reduction unit only* the chain drive has it's own fluid cavity that uses ATF and has traditional drain and fill plugs."

This is Satan...

Fret not, b/c you can swap it with this.

Here's another...

http://www.transtec.com/rebuilder_news/1st_q00r-n.pdf

"Its
four-wheel drive version used from
1985-94 is designated A340H. The
“H” suffix led some builders to think it
stood for hydraulically-shifted transmission,
but what it really represents is
that it is coupled to a hydraulic transfer
case, instead of a mechanical one. The
transmission is electronically shifted in
both the A340E and the A340H."

In 1995, Toyota decided to do away
with their hydraulic transfer case and go
with a conventional mechanical transfer
case. This was a welcome change to
most rebuilders and owners, since you
no longer had to disassemble the
transfer case and build it along with the
transmission. The new designation for
the four-wheel drive units with a
separate transfer case is “A340F.”

To me, that's the trouble with troubleshooting this transmission...

They both work with each other...

But me wonders...

"Transfer case is hydraulically actuated, high or low range will not engage without pressurized ATF.
Valvebody is electronically controlled by #4 soleniod, located in small pan below reduction case."
