91 4Runner Tail Gate Key
#1
My recently bought 91' came without a tail gate key.The original hand book has a key code written in it in a few places.I'm at a loss,I went to a lock smith in Anchorage and he explained that he needed to take apart the entire tail gate in order to cut me a key.The cost $300,does this sound right!?? If so I think I'll have no problem using the interior rear window switch.Any ideas welcome,Thanks

So your saying that your ignition key does not operate the key switch in the hatch back.
No doubt the cost was so expensive because they had no clue how hard it would be to get the lock cylinder out.
Making a key can be a real pain and you can go through quite a few blanks till you get it right.
You need the key to take the cylinder apart
Then you are in the 49th state things tend to be expensive .
I would venture it is cheaper to buy a new cylinder and keys then repin to match your ignition . You can buy the whole lock assembly for like $87.00 from Toyota a far cry from $300.00
They can be a little tricky to change the first time but not impossible.
The key codes only mean something to the Toyota Techs
