91 4runner sr5 manual v6 transmission problems PLEASE HELP

i have a 91 4runner v6 sr5 4runner. its a manual. I have first and second gear it cranks and runs fine. i shift into 3rd, 4th, or 5th and it just revs up really high. it does fine at about 2500 rpm but it wont accelerate. also it grinds shifting into reverse and whines while in reverse. I am new to toyota, and love it so far, i just dont know much about it. it has 290k miles. i bought it 6 months ago. please help me narrow it down?

Welcome to Yotatech. Maybe it's just me, but your descriptions seems really unclear. "Revs up" like in neutral or like in a lower gear? "Doing fine" and "won't accelerate" are mutually exclusive in my book. Have you checked the oil, or pulled the top off to check that the forks are moving? Search the archives, make an effort to fix or diagnose somewhat first, and write a clear explanation and you'll be much better off.

Put it in second gear, put left foot on brake(hard) and let up on clutch slow. If it runs with your foot off the clutch, your clutch is toast.

Oh right, revs up and won't accelerate, like a slipping clutch Guess I was overthinking it...

Red face

Can you smell the clutch lining burning a smell one never forgets!!!

If you can`t smell anything you have a bad bearing or several in the transmission.

In either case the transmission needs to come out.

I would never pull a transmission and not install a new clutch kit unless I just put one in less than 5,000 miles ago.

That is the way I am
