Ok, my son has an 89 with a 22re. Sometimes, it will not start, just turns over. Sometimes it runs fine, but then cuts off when you press in the clutch. The check engine light cuts on intermittently. Sometimes it cuts off when accelerating and might start back with a roll start from second gear, sometimes it won't.
We have pulled the egr and cleaned it, not sure if it is operating though. I don't have a vacum tool. Any ideas where to go from here?

 

start easy and check your grounds, especially for the ignition coil. Also check the fuel pump and make sure thats working. also it could be a pickup in the distributor. my mustang did this and it bugged the hell out of me, turns out it was a bad pickup in the disty.
