i know marlin and allpro make the bare kit for a garage SAS

anyone know what i need to do to make a dana 44 fit under for a standard (if u will) length? what it takes, how to etc...
worth the work? shld i find a yota axle instead...

motor has 225K, any tips to keep it in and add some pwr?

 

Find a toy axle, so much easier then butching any other axle under there

 

keep the toyota axle; for the power I would regear the axles and get a cam

Welcome to Yotatech. I highly encourage you to do a little bit of reading before posting anymore questions. I moved your thread to noobie tech because these are both topics that come up almost daily here. Yotatech is a wealth of information if utilized properly. If you don't know what axle to run or where to find one then maybe it's time to rethink doing a SAS because it only get's more complicated from there.

You'll typically run into issues with a 44 because most of them are a drivers side drop axle. You need a passenger side drop. Another issue is they are garbage unless you spend tons of money upgrading them. Even then you'll never get them as strong as a gusseted Toy axle with Longfields. Somebody will argue with me on that one but I've changed out far more short side shafts in a 44 than Toy shafts on the trail.

As far as your 22RE it's tired and it didn't have that much power to start with. If you really want to stay with that motor and want some power contact Dave at www.davezoffroadperformance.com he builds a 22RE that will impress the heck out of you for a very reasonable price.

 

Start with a Dana 44 from a '73 - '77 Blazer. Passenger side diff, spring-over-axle, 6x5.5" lugs, and the big 3" axle tubes. If you're lucky you can score one with a passenger side flat top knuckle for high steer.

Google for "narrow dana 44". There's tons of write-ups. Use Moser custom forged shafts to match the new length and to eliminate the Dana 44's weak point.

It's cheaper and easier to go with a Toyota axle, but a D44 is anything but "garbage".

 

welcome to YT...I don't how a clue where "Chow" is but I see Toyota SA's on craigslist I all the time.

I would recommend that you stick with a Toyota axle unless you want to go width. A Toyota SA is as strong or stronger than a D44. You will be money ahead and have far less headaches keeping it Toyota, especially since it seems you are very new to this...
