89 3.0 surging, smoking and sputtering

so ive had this account for over a year now and never really had to use it but now it seems as if ive hit a road block...i picked up an 89 3.0 single cab back in december with 83000 original miles on it ((lowest ive seen around vermont)) and since ive had it whenever you start it up it smokes like all hell, and had power surges and when you give it gas it sputters a bit than picks back up but once it warmed up it was fine...when i first brought it home the thermostat was stuck so it would get hot quick so i pulled it out and it stopped surging/getting hot but its still smoking alot at start up (not so much once you let it run) but now it sputters all the time...anyone know what it could be?

HG is a good possibility. Check your oil, milky? Loosing coolant?
