86 4runner not starting
#41
I am having the same problems except mine will not run... it turns over but I'm getting no spark from the coil.. I replaced it 3x and w igniters.. still nothing.. but when I pull of the dizzy wire and hold it to a ground I get 1.spark... that's it.. any help.. email or text me 9102585117 thepunisher0215@gmail.com

One thing I that slipped my mind about last week was the starting fluid. We shot some starting fluid into the intake and we couldn't get it to fire.
Today:
Going to check AFM
Check for spark
Not sure what else

Here is the check list from Saturday.
AFM is in good working order. But swapped another one in just to test.
Starter relay as well. Cleanup up the contacts on both and tried both.
Cleaned the contacts on the ig. coil. They were dirty.
Check fuel pressure in lines. We have fuel.... lots of it.
Check the EGR valve, it was not clogged.
Checked to make sure the dizzy wasn't off (did that awhile ago)
What we get now is weird.
With starting fluid in the throttle body the engine fires! But only once. Like it almost catches and then nothing.
With no starting fluid it with fire only once on the first start of the day. Same thing. It almost goes.

It's to cold to start work on the 4runner until later in the morning.
So what would cause the fuel injectors to not ground?
We redid the wiring harness and cleaned up all the grounds. The ECU checks out fine. With the light bulb test our injectors show a faint flicker. When I plug in a volt meter to the injector and try to start I noticed that the volt meter never goes to 0.
Thanks!

It'll be difficult to check for voltage fluctuation with a VOM. Injectors are to minuscule and fast for a voltmeter to pick it up consistently. Noid lights is the way to do it. If you have spark, fuel, and compression, it will fire. You need to start all over, at the basics, and go from there. Compression, timing chain, spark, distributor rotation/alignment, fuel pressure, etc. there is apparently something that was missed or misread.

@rokblok
The past few days we went back over eveything again. Nothing new to add (I'll post the results later today) except one odd thing--
When I start it and getting what looks like a backfire through the air intake tubing. I put my old air intake tube on (the one that connects to the throttle body) which is wrapped in tape. I went to start the 4runner and it fired, followed by a puff of black smoke and gas smell out of the taped area. It blew the tape off.
My friend and I suspected that it was back firing in some weird place but this confirms it.

So after poking around on the forums here it looks like a backfire through the throttle body is a timing issue (might be separate from the not starter issue). I looked at my FSM and I didn't see a way to check the timing without the 4runner running.
Can a backfire through the throttle body not be connected to getting the 4runner going?
Summary
Ignition coil - checked resistance, all within range
Spark plug check - used a plug tester and all the plugs passed
Spark plug gap - check all the gaps again to make sure, spark plugs are wet with gas as well
ECU - checked out all. We tested all the connections that we could since it doesn't start
AFM - Checks out on the AFM side and ECU side
Grounds - Checked and cleaned all the engine grounds
Starter Relay - within range
Solenoid resistor - with range
Starter - ground and the thin wire check out. The starter turns over no problem
Fuel - pump checks out and is running, with fuel going through the lines and at the injectors
Redid the funky yota connections on the main wiring harness and double check these.
Checked all the fuses!!!
We have this weird backfire through the throttle body and the 4runner still doesn't go.
Hopefully it warms up enough here so I can poke around under the hood today.
