86 4runner build

Hey! Im new on the block so dont roast me too bad. BUT i have spent a few hours looking around for some answers and googled and CANNOT find the answers to a few of my questions. I look forward to learning from all of yalls expertise experience and knowledge and am very open to new ideas and criticism (positive though please).

Now about what i have:

I have 2 toyotas, 1) 2003 2wd 2.4L SR5 Xtra Cab Tacoma with a 3in Body on BFG 31x10.5R15 AT's and 2) 86 4runner with a 3" body and 31's. My Taco is my daily driver but my dream is to build my 4runner into an all around off roadin beast so thats what i am looking into right now. I know it will be a process and i cant do it all at once but i am trying to see what i need to do.

My 4runner needs a lot of work before i can do much with it though....

1 - The clutch is gone. The clutch has just recently warn out to the point that i cannot get it into gear. When the clutch did work, the engine revved up in between shifting gears and it slowly revved down but it was the weirdest thing like something was sticking but the gas didnt stick. Any clue whats goin on there??
2- Brakes are gone.... like i would be better off trying to get out of the truck and pull from the rear bumper in an attempt to stop the truck than to push on the brakes.
3- The 22re fuel injected engine is warn out and isnt worth a thing!! it takes me 10 minutes to get to 40mph. It also does that weird revving thing im talkin about above. Needs a good rebuild
4- Tranny W56 5-speed manual transmission. it seems to be sound, just needs a good engine and clutch to work well. It also has 4.10 gears in the rear.
5- Suspension wise it has a 3in body lift and the torsion bars are cranked up a little and sittin on 31's.

My ultimate goal is to put it up on 35's make it an awesome and solid all around versitle off road machine. Im not sure what tire i want but i want something that does well over rocks, going up hills, but at the same time excels through the mud and cleans itself well.

I would like to do a self rebuild of the engine. Obviously i will have the head and block taken care of by a machine shop and i plan on getting parts from engin rebuilder.

What is involved in doing a transmission tune up? just changing fluid and filter in my w56 or is there more to it?

Should i go ahead and replace the water pump and radiator while engine is out for rebuild? or how do i check working condition or tune up these components?

With the amount of room i have would it be smarter to just stick with the 33's or go for the 35's (those are 31's)

BTW taking a sawzaw to the bumper and modifying it is no problem at all if the 35's will fit with some cutting.

hey whats up. love the truck have one very similar. IFS stands for independent front suspention toyota started this the year of 86. the 86 toyota has the w56 transmission. for cranking the torsion bar idea it kinda sucks becuase it makes the ride really bad and you really have to watch how much you crank them. if your going to but 35's on them your going to want to go with a 4'' suspention and a 2-3'' body lift. also if your going to put 33''s or above your going to want put gears in it.

Nice 4Runner, let me see if i can help a little. First the engine, you would be better off keeping the 22RE, its a very reliable engine and has many options when it comes time to rebuild it. You can add a cam, a ported head with over sized valves (check out engine builders web site) a header and high flow exhaust. A stock replacement clutch will work just fine. As for the suspension, IFS is good for mild wheeling but cranking up the torsion bars will kill the ride, you can use ball joint spacers to gain a little lift, but if you can afford it a solid axle swap would be the best. Gearing, you 4Runner has 4.10 gears stock, but you will really need to regear if you go with 33''-35'' tires, go with 4.88 or 5.29 gears, i have 37x12.50-15 MT/R`s on my 86 4Runner, and if you can afford it sometime in the future you might want to go with duel cases.

mr 86 - thanks for the response... i appreciate it.

myyota- thanks also for the response. very helpful. You have a 86 runner also, do you think i could get 35's in and still be able to wheel well or would i better just goin with the 33's?

I have dreams of one day building a 70 chevelle and after looking into the idea of doing an engine swap, i started looking at doing a rebuild and i agree with you. Its cheaper for 1 and for 2 it gives me experience in an engine. I want to build the chevelle from a short block so rebuilding this engine (granted a BBC is way different than a 22re) is a first step to understanding engines better. I have rebuilt a 2stroke motorcycle before but thats not the same as a 22re either.

To run 35`s you will need a lift and gears, otherwise you won`t be happy with the results.

Thanks

and ive heard with the IFS trucks the steering components prefer to be left without being lifted. I think for now i'm going to go with 33's, 4.88 gears and double case it. If something ever happens that calls for new axles, i'll probably attempt a SAS and then i'll prob lift 4" and put it on 35's but until then i'll stick with 33's.

if your putting on 33s now and what to go 35s in the future, i would go ahead and drop some 5.29s in. you could fit 35s with the lift you have if you do some trimming. theres a thread on here where a guy had a 1st gen 4runner and fit 37s with no lift, just a sawzaw. to see the thread type in fender trimming or fender cutting in the search

Yea thats smart. i will go on and drop in the 5.29's and i started looking around on the internet. I never found the dude with 37s and no lift but i found quite a few people who have put 35's on with a 3"body. Plus im willing to do some cutting so i think im going to go with the 35's, regear to 5.29's and double cases

So my plan with the yota is to fix the brakes, clutch and rebuild the entire engineb with all new internals, bore cylinders, resurface and machined, and port and polish so it will be runnin. Then im gunna put some 35x12.5 R15 goodyear wrangler MT/R's on it, regear to 5.29's, double case, lockers, sliders, some underbody armor, soft top on back, exhaust, nerf bars, winch, KC lights and thats about it. Will be a slow process but im gunna get it done. Im going to try to price it all soon too so i can see what im lookin at

Just do in stages, do the engine, clutch, and brakes first, that will get it running and then you can start buying all of the other stuff as money allows, thats how i built my 4Runner. Im almost done building my 4Runner now, but be prepared to spend 6000 to 8000 dollars or even more by the time your done, and if your able to do any of the work yourself that will help keep costs down alot. As my 4Runner sits now i have close to 10.000 dollars into it. And yes, in my opinion its worth it.

yea i plan on doing a lot of it myself. i plan on having the engine bored and machined port and polished by someone else but im going to pull it, buy parts, install most of the parts (not the valves etc.). doing the brakes, clutch etc by myself. ill have the wheels mounted on rims at a shop but for the most part im going to do it all myself
