85 Pickup running poorly

85 Pickup running poorly
Long story short, I bought an 85 pickup with a fair amount of problems. I am not all that familiar with the 22R, but I know my way around cars well enough.
I ended up having to replace the timing chain, water pump, and head gasket. My carb was running very poorly, so I borrowed a friends that is known to work. I also borrowed his distributor, as mine was not advancing properly.
And this is where the problem is. The truck runs, but not correctly. It will pop through the intake at very low throttle, and dies out at WOT under load. Currently I have one vacuum line hooked to the distributor port closest to the grill.
I thought I may have put the chain on one tooth off, but either way I keep getting a similar problem. I'm looking for some input on how to properly adjust the timing, and which ports need to be open or plugged. I have the port on the distributor closest to the firewall plugged at the moment.
I had set the timing to 0 degrees with both ports plugged.
Any insight into this problem?
Thanks,
Phil
