84 4runner with a thrown rod
Hello everyone, i have an 84 4runner with a thrown rod, i have looked in the local junk yards to see if i can find an 84-89 for an engine, all they have is year 90 and up, so my question is... will my 84 fit a 90? and if not what engine could i possibly use since they dont have any 84 4runners in stock?
i don't know much about cars/trucks, and i got it not too long ago, so any information is appreciated. if pictures are needed just ask and i can post them. I have been trying to get it fixed for a few weeks now and i'm having bad luck finding what i need for it. I literally LOVE the heck out of it so getting it fixed is my only option.
Thanks for any info!!

Just How bad is the thrown Rod Damage?/
Ruined Block?/
The later model engines will work just a question of upgrading to the new engine electronics and wiring harness as well .
If your paying for all this work it might be time to cut your losses and get another one.
If you have a large budget go for it.

i honestly dont know how bad, but basically it sounds like someone is inside banging it with a hammer, it still starts/runs, just runs slow, and VERY slow up hills. which is the most frustrating part for me, seeing that it still has life to it but it's just not drivable. I was trying to avoid having to replace everything else. unless it absolutely needs it. I am willing to replace the tranny since i'm sure it would love a new one anyways.
i am not willing to scrap it, i am dedicated and i care for it so i am willing to put in the time and money (would be nice if it wasnt much) to fix it. Plus i am not the type to just give up, any car can be fixed if given the correct amount of attention. i'm addicted to this generation of 4runner simply because i have always loved the older cars. much easier to work on!! and i love the mudders. its great off road and because i live in the rockies, i want this truck to continue to be my mountain beater.

If it's still running, there a good likelyhood that the engine might be rebuilt for moderate cost.
If you drive it until the engine comes completely apart, it may end up that few, if any, engine parts will be reuseable.
Don't drive it any more, have the engine dismantled for inspection.

well it's sitting about 20 minutes from my house at a park n ride. i was slowly moving to my house to avoid it getting ticketed or towed. i've only moved it twice since it happened. how much are we talking for a rebuild compared to a whole new engine? i was planning to go to a junk yard for the engine so the cost wouldnt be that much anyways. especially compared to the quote i was given at a shop for them to order a new one and labor, which was around $5000, i said ˟˟˟˟˟ that!!! i know someone who is willing to put the engine in for free, since he enjoys working on cars, he does it on his spare time. so that was a HUGE weight lifted. I almost think because of that alone, it might be worth getting a whole new one, but once again, i'm not too familiar with how this all works and what the best solution would be for my price range.

So you need to find a good used engine or do you want to see if this one can be rebuilt .
Does this have the stock 22Re engine or has something else all ready been swapped in??
It comes down to deciding just what you want to do.
What is the rest of the vehicle like is it time for a major restore /rebuild ???
More power to you if you can do the work yourself if your paying labor it can very fast get over $3000 if not more.

i believe it's stock, i am going to take some pictures of it and hope that helps. I am willing to rebuild or buy new, whatever it needs. but basically i just want to know IF i do need a new engine, what engine could i use (if not the same type) without having to change anything else?

the rest of it is in OK shape, not great, the guy who had it before me let it sit for over a year and i dont know about the guy before him. I know i need a new radiator and new gas tank but when it comes to MAJOR issues, the only major one is engine.
