83 Fj60 backfires, diesels and idles low suddenly
I purchased my 1983 FJ60 on may 20 2010 169000 miles from an owner of 3 years. Has some typical rust but clean and perfect interior indicating, seemingly a well taken care of machine. Clutch rebuilt and carb rebuilt in December 2009. After a enjoying my purchase for 2 months of city driving and highway, camping and light off road it seems that overnight I have lost power, I have the occasional backfire, occasional dieseling after the key is off and extracted. Idle has dropped from a frisky 1000 rpm to 600-ish. This seems like it came about suddenly although I'm sure there were signs that I missed. More clues. There is a buzzing from a shiny device under the carb after shutting off the vehicle. This lasts for a few minutes. Visual inspection reveals a nick in the main belt. Cracking is evident but not severe. It always starts, but sometimes instantaneously, sometimes after several cranks and sometimes with the aid of the choke. I drive it at 4500 ft elevation daily 5 miles. Weekends 150 miles to 8000 feet. It has to climb this elevation and struggles to hit 50 at the summit, top speed is 70mph, but it is most happy at 2500 rpm 55mph on the dot. Anything obvious? can you help? I am not a mechanic, but I am curious and can explore and read a manual and I have tools and a garage. I would like advice before I turn it over to a mechanic. I dread finding one. It's hard. Previously I have only owned Audis and that won't do. THANKS!

No offence, but there is a host of Landcruiser Fj60 experts on IH8Mud...
Have you checked there?
Those carbs are so complicated, I'd hate to steer you down the wrong path...

No, I meant to this board... See link in post #2.
With that carb, it could range from a whole series of problems...
