8" rear e-locker gears question
#1
here's the situation: I have an 85 toyota pickup solid axle, 4.10 gears front and rear, open diffs. I got a 4.30 e-locker from a 2wd 4-runner. I want to swap in the e-locker in. Can I just swap the 4.10 R&P in from my stock diff to the e-locker? Or do I need a full re-gearing front and rear to make things match?

The issue is that I have the 2 sets of 4.10 gears for my front and rear diff, and only 1 set of 4.30 in the E-locker. I am really tight on money and was wondering if I could swap the 4.10 from my old diff to the E-locker currently with 4.30.

Whoa, dude... Back up a minute...
Swapping bearings is for the carrier... And the E-diff is not carrier based. The diff is an entirely different casting.

EDIT: Your plan makes entirely no sense.
Just mod the housing and throw it in. Either get another 4:30 TRD diff, or get some 4cyl 4:30 gears, or get a V6 chunk and 4:30 gears... .

Thats exactly what I am trying to do. Do you know where I could find the Bearings in order to swap them?
Also. Is there a difference in size between the V6 4.10 and 4cyl. 4.10 gears?

Changing the bearings out, so that the carrier will fit will net you absolutely ZERO!
All you'll have is an E locker carrier in a non E locker housing...

"All pre-'95 4-cylinder 4wd mini-trucks & 4Runners use the Toyota 8" 2-pinion differential front and rear (except turbo models). This is known as the "4cyl diff." This diff is by far the most common diff in older Toyotas.
V6 carriers can be used in this diff if the correct bearings are used"
And HA! Found it! I been looking all over for this...
There's no such thing as "4cyl" and "V6" R&P.

Yes, you can install 4cyl gears into the V6 housing. You will need a lot of shims on the pinion to do it. Like around .233 worth of shims. Use the V6 bearings in the 4cyl pinion. Carrier bearings remain the same, so just leave the ones on the Elocker carrier. I would recommend a complete V6 install kit to use instead of trying to use the older bearings on the pinion.
If you have never installed gears before, I would highly recommend having a experienced shop do it.

That is correct. That was exactly what i needed to know. You are a god among men.
I have installed the gears before. A buddy of mine and I have done it twice now. I just need to find where I can get the bearings.

That much shim won't make any difference. Its done every day. A lot of time you will receive 4cyl gears in a V6 box. The gear themselves are basically the same except for the depth of the pinion head. Otherwise they will work just fine, and be just as strong.

4cyl gears inside the E-locker 3rd member using the V6 pinion bearings. Then modify your 4cyl housing to accept the Elocker 3rd member. You will need to weld up a couple stud holes, and then drill and tap some others.
