I have put on two rebuilt heads on my 5VZ engine. I now have a lot of valve train noise. I have checked all valve cam clearances and they are all within spec. The Toyota overhaul manual talks about setting up the cam lash. It says that you need to turn the moveable gear on the exhaust cam and place a bolt in the hole. Then install cam, tighten then remove the bolt. Now if you do not do this but all cam marks line up, can not doing this cam lash set up cause valve train noise? Thanks

 

If you did NOT put the service bolt in, the you allowed the 2-piece exhaust cam sprocket to spring out of place. Not good, but you can turn it back if you just look at it and re align the sprocket marks, not to be confused with the 2 cam timing marks.
