4wd problems

I have a 1990 pickup, the 4wd stopped working recently. The light wont turn on, and it won't engage. It has manual locking hubs, which work well. The problem seems to be with the transfer case. I can turn the drive shaft connecting the transfer case to the front diff, and the axles and wheels turn like they should.

I've never worked with any of these parts of a car before, and have been told it could be my ADD system. Which I don't think I have. As I can't locate the actuator or any vacuum lines that would be attached to it.

I'm kinda stumped, I've searched forums for the last few days, and haven't been able to find anything that helps. Hopefully because nothing is there, and not because I'm stupid

Just what happened at the time it quit working??

Does the truck move at all??

Does the rear drive shaft transfer the power to the rear wheels like it should.:jessica:

What happens when you shift into 4Hi Does it make all kinds of noise??:jessica:

If something broke in the case it most often goes boom!!!

Has your transfer case shifter worked loose??:jessica:

You have ADD. Actuator probably not working or bad vacuum line.

I never heard anything explode, ha.
If I do have ADD, then can someone post a photo of where the actuator is supposed to be? as well as where the vacuum lines run?
that would be much appreciated.

See if this answers your question. If you have locking hubs, you could still have ADD. Or you 4wd light burned out, and your 4x4 is working fine.

I see, Well, I'm certain the 4wd isn't working. And I still can't seem to find the actuator. i'm hoping im just looking in the wrong place. I'll try and post a photo soon, but i don't have a working camera phone, or a camera.

If i don't have an add system, what else could be wrong?

Or your hubs could be fail.. if you don't have ADD, the light plays no part in the system, except to tell you that you're not in 2HI.

I have been looking on here for a while, and can't find the answer I was looking for...

I bought a 1990 4runner v6 where the front drive shaft had been removed between the transfer case and the front differential. I am looking to install the front drive shaft again, but want to make sure the transfer case is still in working condition...
The reason i ask is because the transfer case lever moves freely, with no restrictions in the console. I have not torn it apart yet, as I don't want to do work that isn't needed.

Is it normal for the lever to move freely, when the drive shaft is not connected? Or do you think I will need to take a look at the transfer case as well? Thanks.

I would definitely investigate that free lever situation. The t-case should act normal(shifters should have normal range and detent feeling) because it doesn't know if there is a driveshaft or not. Doesn't care. The front output flange should rotate when in 4wd.

Thanks for the quick response...that's what I had thought also, but wasn't sure enough to spend 200+ on new transfer case. I hadn't thought of checking if the output flange rotates or not.. Thanks for the help.

Update. A few years late...
Had a bad transfer case. Swapped it with one from a junkyard.
No ADD on my truck.
