4 cyl max tire size?

I have an 85 22r pick up and im looking to buy new larger size tires. With it being a 4cyl its a little sluggish so i was wondering what size would be too big because i want to put 33in on. would i need to re-gear or no?

Plenty of people run big tires with stock gears. It's going to be gutless though. You'll never use 5th gear again unless going down hill or on flat ground with a tail wind.

Your clutch will hate you.

If your buying new tires I would say 31's if you want any kind of power while in high range. My dad had a 87 22r with 4.10's and 31's slowed it down bad on the highway and we don't have any hills down here. Off road in low range it was decent still had to slip the clutch even in 1st. It depends what kind of terrain you will be driving it on.

If your going with 33's I'd re gear. I have 31's on my RE and think its the limit without doing gear change. Can still pull 5th on freeways and some hills if already up to speed but barely.

33s on 4.30s with a 22re. It's bad enough that I would park it until I save $$$ for gears but I could live with it if there was a gun to my head. I am lucky enough to have another daily driver though.

Depends on the size of the tire and the weight of it as well. Cooper's in my experience tend to run 1/2-3/4 ". Smaller than advertised they are fairly light weight though. Toyos open country mt is large and very heavy. I am running the toyo's in a 31" with 4:10's and no problems and they aren't much smaller or lighter than my old cooper 33's. it will be slower yes but you can run them just fine. Put a 2 1/4" cat back exhaust on it and go. In my opinion the exhaust is the best power gain you can do for the money if you can weld.

I have 33" bfg all terrains on my 85 4runner with a 22re. While yes it does have less pep than it should, it still putts around pretty good with the stock 4.10s. Then again. I rebuilt the motor 2kago and bored it over .040 and put in a 272 cam from engnbldr. Gears would make it better, but it does fine now.

if you wanna run a 33" tire, re-gear to 4.88. Your drivetrain will thank you!

I love the all terrains on mine. Would definitely run the km1's if given the chance though.
