4.88 Gearing Help

Hey Bros,

I've got an '87 22R Pickup that I'd like to gear down. I'm running on 285/75R16's and after about 60 mph it just doesn't have much left. I'm thinking I should run 4.88's front and rear but there's a lot out there and I'm not sure what all I need to accomplish this? can I just buy a set of ring and pinions for the front and rear? or do I need to buy two 4.88 third members? obviously I'd like to do it as easy and as inexpensively as I can? Anyone been down this road? How big of a dent in your wallet did it put?

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Thanks

Everyone will say I'm wrong, but for that truck I'd recommend 5.29's for 33's.

Hey thanks for the link. I liked the way it rode with 31's on the stock set (4.10 I'm figuring). Everything I've seemed to look at says put 4.88's with 33's... know anyone who runs 4.56's on 33's?

Easy would be buying whole 3rd members from a scrap yard and swapping them in. Some 4runners came with factory 4.88s.

Setting up gears takes a bit of work. Read through the gearinstalls link that was posted above and see if you can recreate what hes doing. If not, any good shop should be able to set them up for you.

have you played around with an RPM calculator ?

http://www.csgnetwork.com/multirpmcalc.html

5.29's and 33's would be great for acceleration , but by the time your up to freeway speeds , like 65 - 70 mph , your creepin' towards 4,000 rpm's.

Gas mileage will likely suffer ...

I'd be fine with 5.29's and 33's. Plus if you ever bump up to 35's , your all set to go .

Yeah I played with one the other night and just did some messin' with the link you provided, I might have a screwy tac in my rig cause according to the sound my truck makes at the RPMs I get off the tac and the RPMs the calculator suggested, that lil 22r will be screaming. Also, I don't even think I've even pushed it past 3500, but then again, possible screwy tac. I did like the numbers I got with 4.56's on 33's for 65. I don't think 5.29's or 35's are in my future though haha. that's a lot of tire for me lol

I'm not sure where you got 4000 RPM from while doing 70.

This gear calculator suggests 3250 Rpm at 70 with 5.29's (right in the power range).
With 4.88's, you'll be almost exactly 300 RPM's lower at 70.

Having actually run 5:29's and 33's you are leaning on 4000k with a 22re @70. I would have loved 3250 at 70mph in my old 85.

I've had 5.29's on 33's too. Only difference is my truck is a 2.7 with a w59. But, the w59 has similar gear ratios to the w56 in 5th gear.

I'm really not sure where you're getting the 4k rpm number. Maybe that was 4th gear.

Nope that was 5th. Might be just that slight difference in the tranny makes more of a difference than it seems it should. Also 33's can very an inch easily. I was running coopers which at the time ran on the small side for 33's so if you had a set that ran on the large side of 33's that might also make the difference. Oh well I just want my 85 back. Need to save up so I can find another. That's another tangent.

I have 4.56's with 33's. It's geared plenty low for driving around. I have a V6 though. I'd say at least 4.88 or 5.29's. Change gears once and be done with it.

I am going to regear to 4:56's as soon as I find a used 8" cluster preferably w/locker. Ok so I might be dreaming there on my budget. I know my experience is dated back to the 90's and thinking changes all the time, back then it was 4:10's ( or 4:30's I think rare) for 31's, 4:56's for 33's, 5:29's for 35's, and 5:71's for 38's.
So for 33's I am planing on running 4:56's. I have large/heavy 31's Toyo Open Country M/T's at the moment and do fine for 4:10's. so 4:56's should turn 33's pretty well and get my rpm's cruising close to stock.
