hi, Im new here. I just bought(yesterday) 95 4runner auto with 109,000. tire 31.
While i was driving at highway, the tachometer showed me about 4,200 while the speed its about 75-79mph (gps reading 67-69 mph). I see on the faq by Robinhood, it written something that "....an inch bigger tire size can make the 2nd gen ...meter gauge error.." Is this happening on my car or I have to start concerning about a bad tranny. The tranny switch very smooth but this High rpm make me very concern. (I cant believe this "old" car has a very smooth tranny, therefore I have difficulty to count that 4,200rpm was stuck on the 3rd or 4th gear) Can somebody help me?
Also, if im not wrong, there was no different between i pushed the O/ drive on or off but I will double check about this because there was to many cars on the street so I couldnt make a long trip/test.

 

Not normal. You likely have a bad shift solenoid.

I just made sure about the o/d. The light on the dash is perfectly as it should, but It was NOT working. I was driving constanly at certain speed (60 mph) then I pushed the o/d button, there was nothing different (at tachoMtr nor the speed/ engine sound) it was the same thing as I didnt push the button. It seems stuck on the 3rd gear. Is this a bad solenoid? I search on the partsbin.com, autopartwarehouse, and ebay, but I couldnt find overdrive solenoid etc... where can i get it?

Did you look at the link I posted? There are link to where you can buy new shift solenoids.

 

yes, I did. I just tried to compare the price with other places.
On that link, there were couple possibilities, If im not wrong, should I try it with the solenoid first? thanks again.

 

all well done now. Thank you. But it was not the solenoid at all. Somebody wants to guess? Hint: something simple and cheap.

In your first post, you mentioned that someone was reporting a speedometer error with an inch larger tires. If your rig was previously geared for large tires (like 35's or better), then that might explain some of this, but you might have a bad sensor, or something. Too hard to tell from here without driving it myself. lol

 

I couldnt believe it, I couldnt find anywhere for this common problem on this website. The answer is:
bad thermostat period
So, for many people who had/have this problem, this is the easiest and cheapest solution. ALmost all of the people think the O/D problem is related with a bad solenoid (maybe it is not wrong at all if they do change the thermostat first).

 

thanks, i was thinking tstat on mine as well since it takes forever to warm up.
how did you figure it out?

 

it's easy as 321. The gauges on dashboard all in perfect condition. The temp gauge was the only thing that stuck on 1/4 or 1/5 left side forever, as soon I changed the thermostat the gauge moves normally for about less a little bit from the 1/2. ( it takes about 5 minutes to be there in 27 degree F this morning). If you have chance, order it from toyota dealer; maybe about $4 or $5 more. Mine is Pepboys with the gasket too.

 

my geo prizm( toyota corolla) did the exact same thing.

 

yep same with my honda... od wont kick on till the vehicle is fully warmed up.

 

wow....i didnt know that the T-stat had ANYTHING to do with the Auto tranny and OD...learn somethin new everyday

 

Can someone let me know please where/how can i find the sparplugs replacement detail information? ('95 4runner white with stripe on the side).
Also, where can I buy a blue stripe sticker on the side of this car?

 

$16 for a tstat at dealer at my cost. damn that's expensive and like $1.50 for gasket
