Is the 3vze good for offroading?
I have a 3vze in my 92 4Runner (5speed), and I just had a question about it..
Can the 3.0L handle offroading. Jw because i dnt want to go offroading or mudding and crack/blow a HG.
How about the 5VZE in my 99 4Runner? (auto)
-Thanks.

i have the same year 4runner as you, with the same motor and transmission. I wheel mine moderately and it does great... I even get amazing gas mileage when wheeling because I try and keep the RPMs as low as possible until I need them.

I have a veezee in my 92, which is my dedicated trail rig. I toasted my motor due to water and mud getting in the intake and spinning a bearing, but I was still able to drive to the trail head (sounded sooo bad) to get towed home. I like this motor, so Im in the process of putting another one in then truck.

hahaha, you have toyota's worst and best engines... 3vz is a nightmare to work on and underpowered but you don't need a lot for offroading; wheel mine up some steep nasty trails here in the cascades and it does great even though I'm usually loaded down heavy... as for the 5vz, well, it's about the best/most reliable v-6 out there in many folks opinion for SUV applications. both are more than adequate for the vehicle's capabilities, happy wheeling...

From: Nashville TN. I can help you if you're close BUT NOBODY CAN HELP YOU IF YOU DON'T FILL YOUR LOCATION IN!
The main thing I try to get across is, they (the 3vz) are fickle female dogs...
They do not tolerate being run low on oil or water... And IF they do once, they usually won't twice.
Treat them with kid gloves and know their limits and you'll be fine.
If you've got a 4Runner with a 5 speed, you are a LUCKY man... Unfortunately, you (and your avatar) sound 12...
This is not the motor for a young person to mess around with. It puts the 4runner on the fast track to the scrap heap...

they are the biggest pain in the ass ever made. mine was reliable, and reliably gutless. routine maintenance on that engine sucked. i will never willingly own another 3.0. 2 shimmed valves per hole. a bazillion vacuum lines. low displacement for a relatively heavy engine. it was fine off-road though. i took mine through many river crossings, bottomless mud holes, up 13,000' mountains... i traded the truck and it's still running strong. but i also credit my luck with it due to it having headers instead of the catastrophic-failure-inducing stock manifolds. now i stick to the 22re exclusively, by choice and by circumstance
