3vze engine falters

I have a 92 4-runner 3vze 5 sp 4wd with 250k on the ticker. When I depress the gas, the engine will begin to speed up (from 1000 rpm to 2500 rpm) and then it stops running. No engine codes. the engine will begin to fire again for a second or so and falter again. This is a repeatable process. I can not get the engine to run above 3,500 rpm. All of this is with no load. I recently installed a new fuel filter. no change. New TPS, no change. unplugged the mass air flow and the engine dies. I pulled the fuel tank and it seems clean and the fuel pump filter screen appears to be clean. How can I test the fuel pump? Any idea on what could be wrong would be most appreciated?

If had to make a guess i'd say EGR. Unplug the vac line(s) to it try and see what happens.

So, I have validated fuel is not the issue. I am able to get the truck to idle and the fuel pressure stays around 40. I have put my timing light on the coil to dist wire and the pulsating light seems consistient. As soon as I depress the accelerator the the engine falters (generally it stalls) and there is no spark according to what I see with the timing light. I just replaced the coil and ignitor and it did not improve. I appreciate your experiance and response!

Check the air intake boot. Those things like to rip, and cause unmetered air into the intake
