3.0 v6 auto. 4.88 or 5.29

hello guys. i have a 3.0 v6 auto running 32 and will be the largest size tires i will be running. truck is not my DD but i do want to use it for long trips. unknown of current gearing other than its stock. it does just fine around the city but when going to pismo or trails i have to climb pretty steep roads. usually im in 2nd doing 50-65mph. also have a 8x10 trailer i will using and hauling a honda 450r quad.
would 5.29 be too much and kill my mpg, not that its any good but on the highway current i think its pretty good. the city streets sucks on mpg.
those with a 3.0 auto. what are your rpms at 65mpg? please state 4.88 or 5.29 gearing. thanks for the info and tips

side note: i also plan on running a e locker rear but still cant find one used yet.

first thing if u can take the auto trans and replace it with a 5 speed. u will do better with towing and city mpg. i know someone that is running 3.0 5 speed with 4.88 and 33 tires and at 60 he is at 2500-2700 rpm. i just put in a 5 speed with 31 tires and 4.56 gears and im at 2700 to 3000 at 60to 65. i feel like i have plenty of power to run bigger tires and pull a trailer. im not sure if this helps much or not but just putting it out there.

I have the 3.0, auto trans with 4.56 gears and unless the grade is really steep i'm able to pull hills in 3rd( drive because overdrive is the auto's 4th gear) and with 33's they practically act like a 4th gear once rolling. Still only hitting no more than 3,200 up hill and when put into 4th its drops to 2,400 @ 65 mph easy. What ratio is your rig? Being an auto you should be either 4.56 or 4.88s anyways.

Regearing for 32s is waste of money unless you find some cheap OEM 4.88s to drop in.

5 speed is not an option right now. having 4 vehicles and the runner is the only auto which is nice to have every once in a while.

the hills i go on. i would have to be in 2nd to go 60-65mph which sucks
hard to find info on what gearing i have without going to the truck and checking. it could also be 4.30?

why is it a waste of money? being near redline in 2nd gear just to do 60-65 feels like im gonna blow my transmission up. being a 3.0 doesnt help because of the headgasket issue but since i have headers. heat shouldnt build up around number 6 cylinder anymore. i still worry tho. being early 88 mine didnt fall under the recall and should have better headgaskets

not really regearing for 32 because it does perfect on flat grounds. if everywhere i plan on taking this was flat roads to and back, i wouldnt care to regear.

now that im thinking bout it. the gears are only for uphills which will be a small part of the road trip so 4.88 might be a better option. thanks for the help.

That's more then a gearing issue. If I can keep 60mph in at least 4th (3000RPM) sometimes 3rd 4000RPM with 4.10's and 33's with my 22r (yes 22r carb) even though I am a manual trans, I don't see why a 3.0 auto can't keep itself out of 2nd.

its only when im climbing really steep hills. plus at the time i had a 8x10 trailer with a quad plus a few big friends in the truck. PLUS gear. i had no problems driving the runner this loaded on small hills and flat roads. steep hills is where im hating the drive lol. plus being auto i lose like 15% of power.

i still can decide if i want 4.88 or 5.29. i been searching alot but its hard cuz more topics are about 5 speed. being auto. i have pretty long gears and some say with OD that 5.29 would be perfect. i really dont wanna have to redo it, you know.. i just wanna drive haha up steep hills

What are your gears now? You might already have 4.88s, but most likely 4.56s.

I vote 5.29 beacuse of the trailler pulling. And if you find that they are to low, just get bigger tires. :

Yeah, even when I'm climbing really steep hills I can still keep her in drive(3rd) but when not on the highway like a steep back road she will drop to about 30 mph to reach the top(2nd) - gutless to say the least but i'm satisfied with it, the only thing i've noticed with the auto is it likes to jump from 3rd to 2nd quite a bit while climbing, unless I really keep my foot on her. I vote for the 4.88s myself simply due to the fact i believe with our motors(3.slow) and my personal gearing(4.56) is a perfect match for 33s. I think I would be able pull 35s all day with 4.88s. Also sounds like you do mostly highway driving and you wouldn't want wind the p*ss out of your motor getting there.

Know that if you get a factory 4.88 diff, NO OTHER GEARS will work with them because of the offset pinion. SO if you decide to go lower later, your looking at getting another 3rd. So keep your stock one.
