3.0 questions

im currently replacing my crank since i spun a rod and things went to hell in a hand basket fast. I was wondering if there are any simple things i could to to add power to my 3.slow. I am going to be doing the ISR mod, and possibly the camry AFM mod as well, depending on what you guys say. I live in oregon, and we dont have any smog laws here really, so is there anything i can do with the smog equip? Any oregonian knows about the pass to get to sisters and such, and im tired of having to hold 3.5k rpm and barely going 50mph up the hills, i feel sorry for anyone behind me going up hills!

I bought a 3vz-fe crank, since it is forged and not cast. im just looking for the best info possible here lol!

save your money for a 3.4 swap, the 3.slow will always be slow and fuel hungry its just the nature of the beast.

Headers are the best thing for this motor. But they are pricy.

ive been looking around, and 3.4's cost about 1300 used around here, and that doesnt include the wiring harness/ecu. i would prefer to keep my 3.slow for now, untill i can afford the 3.4 because i would rather set it up with everything else for 4 bying as well, like dual cases and armor and such. the 3.0 does dig down good up here though, it has gotten me much further than my 4.0 jeep.
So there is nothing i can really do with the smog equip? like that thing coming off the exhaust manifold on the pass side? and is the camry AFM worth it? gas milage im not to worried about, my other car is a 78 camaro with a built 400 in it lol, so this gets way better gas mileage as is.
Also, the ECT POWER button we ahve is like chevy truck's tow package button right? at least kind of? For some reason i thought it was a switch for extra lights XD. Does it give any better torque for hills?
Sorry, lots of questions. i have my motor pulled currently and working out the crank.
Thanks in advance for the help!

you can find them for a good price if you look hard enough, i got mine for $800.00 motor, 5speed tranny ,both wiring harness, and drive lines. but ya its a lot of work and money, but ask any one who has swapped them in, they will all say its worth every penny!

as for the de-smoging you can eliminate the EGR on the passenger side of the motor, the ISR is ok it really just makes the 3.0 louder, now if you put a snorkel and an ISR and eliminate the intake tubes with the ridges that disturbe the air flow like i had on my 3.0 it helps that motor breath i noticed beter mpg s and HP but not much.

honestly if you dont want to throw a lot of money to the 3.slow a good tune up will yield the best results, change out the fuel filter, plugs wires rotorand cap, air filter, and an oil change.

The power button allows the auto transmission to shift at different points than it normally would. I find it also makes it easier to kick it down and get it to downshift faster.
I always have mine illuminated.

Ah, cool smithy! should get together some time and hit some trails once i finish my crank swap. as for the ISR ill be using mandrel bent tubing, seriously trying to debate the camry AFM swap, since it does draw in more air, and relocating the afm. From what ive read, the 3.4 drops right into the 3.0 mounts. Was your runner an auto from factory? if so how hard was it to install the 5speed into a stock auto? i would prefer a manual for the added power and gas savings if i were to kick the cash out for a 3.4.
I bought the runner for 1000$ had a busted HG, replaced that in 2 days, and killed the crank at the mud flats lol. just trying to do what i can while i have the block removed. i do not currently have the cash to drop into headers, and would rather save that money for the 3.4 swap. that exhaust cross pipe the goes behind the block is such a bad design flaw, would it be worth it to wrap it with header wrap to keep heat away form the block or would it really matter? i know thats a HG killer.
i know, its a lot of questions, but i have alot of experience, just not with toy's so im gathering info before hand, stick with me here lol.

ya we should wheel some time, ya my 4runner was an auto when i had the 3.0, i got manual trans with the 3.4 but sold the trans( because the 3.4 trans has the t case drop on the drivers side) and i got a 1989-95 manual trans with the passenger side drop. i to bought my 4runner with a blown head gasket about 5 years ago. dont bother wrapping the headers, the rear cross over isn't the culprit per say its actually where the cross over meats the other header, all that heat dumps infront of the # 6 cylinder, and it dosent help its a single over head cam, and so on, just a por design all together really.

by the way i have a thread on my swap that i made after finishing , not the most detailed but ill give you an idea of whats involved, you can find it in the 3.4 swap form.
