2WD Bad, 4WD good

A locked 2wd will not go as far as an open 4wd. I've tried it. Open 4wd still has low range. 2wd does not.
A locker will help you out a bunch. It would be a great mod for your truck. But don't think you'll be able to suddenly wheel the difficult trails with it, or you'll get in over your head, and run into trouble.

I totally agree on the Low range. Theres not enough weight over the rear wheels anyway, you definetly wont get the traction that a 4 wheel drive has even the simplest things like reversing out of something steep or slippery can be a pain in the ass without 4 wheel drive.
Answer to your question: Sell your truck, and get a 4x4.
