2wd to 4wd conversion

Ok. Here's the deal. I have a 98 T4R SR5. I've built this thing from the ground up. The frame and drivetrain was donated from a friend, so I was stuck with 2wd. I built the motor (3.4L) from new OEM parts, and it has less than 10k on it currently. I have a friend that owns a body shop, and I bought the body from him for cheap (needs a coat of paint, but whatever) I've recently been adding new performance parts (K&N cold air, larger throttle body with custom spacer, flowmaster 40, and a friend is welding up some new shorty headers.) Well I finally found a purpose for this truck. It sucks down a lot less gas than my stroked chevy 350, so I would like to keep it a DD. Problem is, it really needs 4wd where I live. I know there are plenty of posts on this already, but I really can't find the answers to a few questions I have.

I would really like a COMPLETE parts list for what I need. Cash isn't too much of a problem, and I'm not going to be charged for labor. I literally just had the trans rebuilt, so I would like to salvage it if possible. I'm not sure what the difference is between the A340F and the A340H. If its just the tail shaft I might be able to fab one. If I need a completely new trans, oh well. I'll figure something out.

One last thing, PLEASE try to keep posts like "just sell yours and buy a 4wd one" to a minimum. This truck quickly became my baby, and I have tons of shop time into it. Try to remember it's a project car, so I work on it on the side. Regardless, this is happening.

Thank you for any input,

Chris

If you really want to do this.

The easiest way is to buy the 4x4 frame with running gear. To give a complete list of parts would take forever .

Do you plan a IFS or SFA a whole different world of goodies just there.

That way you have the majority of the parts you need to start. You can then go over this and bring up to your standards . Have the driveshafts front differential and suspension along with the crossmembers etc.

Your body your fresh engine on a reworked running gear about as good as it gets . Once the frame and suspension is brought up to your specs it is only a few days with good help to swap the rest around.

Giving you the option to drive your Toyota till your ready to finish it all up.

I don`t know enough about the automatics to know if your trans will be able to be mounted to the transfer case. I do know it is all one piece .

I am pretty sure the 2wd and 4wd frames are different enough that without a lot of rework it wont work. Sure it can be done Then your always running off getting the part you forgot or did not know you needed .

Then again it is hard to know just what you consider to much work also a fine line between doing this for fun and the other half nagging to get it finished .

Good luck!!

I was a little afraid of that. I was thinking about the same thing. Problem is, I really don't know if I can find a T4R frame around here. The salvage yards won't let you buy entire vehicles, and I really can't go in there with $1k and spend 3 days ripping all the parts out of the yard. I contacted the friend that owns the body shop, and he basically told me he can't get me a wrecked truck. Is there anywhere I can look online? Or should I just try to buy one off ebay or craigslist with a blown engine?

if i was you i would try and find someone with a 4wd one that has a blown motor or something wrong and switch over the running gear, u will need trans, front diff, axles, all front steering components and the front a arms and hub assy. front and rear drive shafts, shift boots and consiel area trannys brace rear, thats all i can think of at the moment.

I would also like to keep it entirely manual 4wd if possible. I really don't want to swap computers, etc.

I'm also open to possibly just switched to a locker and putting a winch on the front, but I don't think that's going to be as useful as 4wd.

Be nice to just where you are ??:jessica:

I find it hard to believe a person with a body shop does not have any connections to find a vehicle for you.

No matter I would just look around on here the other Toyota Forums as mentioned Craigs List , Ebay someone will have what you need.

So very much easier to do it this way pulling parts or yard parts missing hardware burnt bolts broken parts.

Whole vehicle done .

Given some things might not be up to your standards but at least it is all there to see.

I gotta think should be a few 98`s around with a bad engine or something else you can replace for a reasonable price.

Good luck It is not so much of a mechanical challenge as just getting all the parts in the same place at one time.
