2nd Gen 4runner Help Needed

I drive a 1990 4runner and I want to off-road more but am not sure what to do to it first. I was hoping to put a lift on it and some bigger tires but it seems thats the last thing i should do. I keep hearing lockers and armor first so I was wondering what kind and where do I get these things? How much does it cost? What is the best kind?

Any feedback would help.
Thanks,

Kevan

It all is going to depend on what kind of wheelin you're planning on doing. Trail and country stuff, start with accessories (lockers, bumpers, armor, sliders, lights, etc). If you want to do major rock climbing you will have to shell some bucks for the lift and tires. There are a few ways to lift 2nd gens - 1.5" for about $350-$500. 4" IFS kit for about $1000-$1300 or SAS $2000-$3000.

Where would you recommend getting the lockers and armor?

a locker is probably going to make your rig the most capable but can be pretty expensive
sliders are a good investment for protection
P.S. You can fit 33X10.5 tires stock.

Search the board for "aussie lockers"
An aussie is an automatic locker, some think auto lockers have bad road driving techniques, but you have to get used to them.
A selectable locker I.e. Arb air locker, Detroit e-locker; Are on the more expensive side, but you dont have to worry about getting used to it on-road.
Just dont keep it locked leaving a trail and take a turn doing 50.

Armor, Allprooffroad.com has nice bumpers, http://www.davezoffroadperformance.c....php?f=3&t=490 also

Thanks a bunch guys. Hopefully I find something I like. 33x 10.50 will fit and not rub?

Nope, no rubbing with a 33x10.5... just keep in mind if your 4runner is auto... it's going to have a heck of a time with those 33s. I hope it's not your daily driver.

Its manual but I probably won't do tires for another year or so anyway. If you get the Aussie lockers is it permanently locked?

No only when one tire spins then the locker will lock causing both wheels to turn evenly

I'd recommend Zuk over Randy's any day of the week.

Haha. That probably wouldn't be a bad idea.
